Shop carefully for 100% lye and not something similar. Hardware stores, though if you buy a case you have to sign for it. You can have it shipped and buy from an internet vendor, and I believe you also have to sign for it, and it has to be shipped ground, I believe because it is considered a hazardous chemical.

You can make lye water with wood ashes. I've seen grandmother do it to make her lye soap but I've never done it myself. I don't know if its the same thing as you buy in a dry form at the store.

I get mine at Menards. They carry a couple different brands that are 100% lye.

from what I can tell, when you make it from wood ashes, it is a mix of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide

if you are making Hominy, make it from hard wood ashes for best results, that is if you are making it form wood ashes the on line thing sounds easier and you can also use hydrated lime, sold at mexican grocery stores under the name Cal
