Who's ready for another forum quilt? It's September, the fabric is ready, so let's get this thing started!!
Like the quilt we did this Spring, this will be a one-block project, not a swap.
To each person who signs up, I will send a 12" square of fabric. Using that fabric, and any other fabrics you like, you will sew a quilt block of any pattern you desire, as long as it finishes at 12.5 inches square. Please wash and dry all fabrics you use (forum fabric has all ready been prewashed), but please do not use fabric softener.
Mail your block back to me by Nov. 14th to be eligible for the drawing. Please make sure to put enough postage on it, and allow up to ten days for delivery (yes, sometimes it does take that long, USPS only knows why. . . ) For each block received by the deadline, I will enter the name of the member who created it into the drawing, and then draw a winner at random after the mail goes through on Nov. 14th. The winning name will be posted on this thread that evening.
The person whose name is drawn at random will receive all the blocks. The winner is responsible for supplying (either purchase or use stash fabric) four yards of fabric for the next forum quilt and must mail me that fabric. Once the new fabric has been received, I will send the winner the blocks they won, plus an extra yard of the forum fabric to use in finishing their quilt.
Reply to this thread to sign-up, and then PM me your mailing addy so I can get the fabric sent out to you ASAP. We have 26 pieces of fabric available, and sign-up will remain open until either the fabric is all taken or Oct. 12th (to allow time for mailing fabric, sewing the block, and mailing it back to me by the deadline)
If you would just like the sew a block, but not be included in the drawing please don't be hesitant to sign up. Everyone is welcome to make a block! Just let me know in your PM if you prefer to opt of out the drawing.

Ooohh, I'm first! I'm so glad that this tradition has continued here. I've always liked to see what everyone does with the same bit of fabric.

I'm in, too, but you don't need to send me a square of fabric as I kept one. Thanks!

I'm in - but like last time, please don't put me in the drawing to receive all the squares. It's at the top of my skillset to to get a single square done.

And me. But please could you mail my fabric square real soon, due to international delivery times and the fact that I'm frantically busy at the moment organising a rural festival, so need as much lead-in time as possible.

Fabric has been mailed to everyone who has signed up so far. There is still lots of time and lots of fabric if anyone else wants to join in.

My fabric arrived today. I am swamped this week with Bill's sculpture show/reception this weekend so, hopefully, next week I can dig into the fabric and begin!

I'm having a problem with my quilt block. I have it all created and am attempting to put an outside border all around it. This outside border is suppose to have a different color at each of the 4 corners. I've already created it twice and had to rip it out twice because it is just not working.
The little block at each corner is suppose to be approximately 2" on each side of the corner yet without a seam in the middle...hoping that makes sense.
What I've done is cut the 4 corner squares; yet when I go to attach each to the main part of the block (not the outside border I'm working with), it does not work. As stated, I'm trying to do this without having a seam in the little squares...except for where it connects with each side of the border of course.
Is there a tutorial that shows me how to do this? I have been looking and have not found one. If not one available, can anyone instruct me as to how to get this done?

motdaugrnds, I am not good at visualizing! However, with that said, I will try to help. Someone else may be better than me. Is this a published pattern or one of your own? If the four corners are suppose to be different colors, what about the border between them? Are you trying to put the corners in before the other border pieces and then sew the other border pieces to the corner piece? If that is what you are trying to do you need to do what is called a set-in seam. That should google for you. Take a look and see if that is what you are trying to do, if not, we will try again!

motdaugrnds, I'm having trouble visualising this too. You say you've got your block finished except for the border around it. Am I right in thinking that the long strips of fabric that make up the border equal each side of your existing block (minus any little squares)? If so, I'm wondering if you're piecing the border non-conventionally. Normally you would sew 2 strips of fabric to the main block, e.g. one on the left hand side, and the other on the right. You'd then sew a little square to each end of the 2 remaining strips, iron them and then add one strip/square to the top and bottom of the block. There shouldn't be any seams in the middle of the squares doing it this way, and everything should fit well. I'm assuming that your border squares are the same width as your border strips. If it's an existing pattern, do you have a link so we can see it?

In this example, I would sew the corners to the top and bottom strip first. Sew the sides to the main piece, then sew the top and bottom strip with the corner already sewn in. Unless I am completely misunderstanding- which is possible...

Goodness...I'm trying so hard to understand what you have both just said. Maybe I'm just too tired tonight so will re-read again when rested. The block I'm creating with the material sent me is as conventional as one can get...suppose to be as easy as it can get too.... No I do not have a tutorial on it and am, again, sewing it by hand as mother's machine has been too heavy for me to get out of the storage and into the trailer. No, the long strips I'm using for the border do not equal the existing block. I made sure they were 1-1/2 inches shorter so as to give room for the little squares at each corner....Yes, "minus any little squares"... I have no idea what "non-conventional" placing of a border is so cannot respond to that Kiwi. The border is not for a "finished" border because the block I'm creating is not a "finished" block. It is simply a block like we are all doing which will be "finished" by the winner. I don't understand the explanation: "Normally you would sew 2 strips of fabric to the main block, e.g. one on the left hand side and the other on the right." Are you talking about the "front" of the fabric and the "back" of the fabric? OR Are you talking about sewing the border fabric to one side of the block, leaving 3 more sides to be done? If I'm understanding correctly, you're suggesting I sew a little square to only 2 of the 4 border strips, meaning the little squares will be extended longer than the existing block. Then sew the other 2 border strips up to connect with the extended little squares. Is this right? I'm not sure if that will work; but will certainly try it next time I work on this block. Actually in thinking about it, that won't work because it will simply turn the little squares into rectangles that are going down 2 sides of the existing block. I'm wanting half of the little squares on each of the 4 border strips meaning each little square would be "L" shaped but with both verticle part of the "L" and horizontal part of the "L" being the same length. Does that make sense? Sorry no link as I created this monster myself.... Melissa, your picture of the "border" of that block is similar except that the little square I want does not set corner to corner with the existing block. What I want actually surounds the existing corners on 2 sides. Billie, I'm thinking that "set-in seam" you mentioned may be what I'm attempting; so will google it. I did google the "set-in seam" and the only youtube videos I found were showing 3 diamond-shaped pieces of fabric. This turned out a "Y" shaped seam in the middle. Will see if I can use that as an example and modify it for my needs.....

Thanks Melissa, I was searching for a photo of what I was visualising from motdaugrnds description. You and I had the same thought. I'm trying to visualise your pattern motdaugrnds - maybe I'm just tired as well, LOL. Perhaps a photo of your squares, strips and the block laid out (but not sewn) would help clear my brain fog?

I don't have a photo and really don't want to let anyone see my block before it is completed; so I know I'm asking you all to suggest while in the dark somewhat. If you can picture ONLY the border which is surrounding the block already created. That border being a solid color on all four sides of the created block. Then picture an "L" shaped piece of material of a different color than the border with both parts of the "L" being the same length. Now add four of those "L" shaped pieces of material to the border, one at each corner with the corners of the existing block fitting snuggly at the inner corner (where both sides of that "L" shape meet) of those 4 small pieces of material. Then at each end of that "L" shaped piece of material is the border going all around the completed block. I don't know how better to draw a pic of this with words....and I've not found a tutorial video that speaks to this. Now the problem is my not wanting a seam in that "L" shaped piece of material at each corner of the existing block....The only seam I'ld like to have are the two seams that actually join the "L" shaped little piece to the border.
