Yesterday morning Luna started her day pretty rough with diarrhea. She still chased the cats and played like normal so I didn't call the vet just kept an eye on her. Over the course of the day she seemed to get better and this morning she appears to be back to normal. However she hasn't had any food since yesterday morning. She's had limited amounts of water, plenty of it but normally she gulps it down so I left her small amounts in her bowl instead of filling it up.
Now, I'd like to give her some food but I'm not sure what to give her. I keep reading online that she should have white rice and boiled chicken. Then slowly transition back to her normal food. Her normal food is the bison puppy formula of Taste of the Wild if that makes any difference.
Help?

I'd go with the chicken and rice, and some yogurt in small amounts, then mix in her regular food. I think it makes a difference if she was sick or ate something that gave her diarrhea.

I gave her some white rice. My thinking was that it would be better to start with one ingredient just in case. She was hilarious to watch since we've taught her not to eat people food. If I even twitched she would run away and look at me. She finally finished it and so far so good. I've got some chicken on boiling now and will add that to the rice later on today in another small meal.
It wouldn't surprise me if she found something to eat that she shouldn't have. It's a constant battle to keep rocks and mulch out of her mouth when we go out. There's nothing quite that bad in the house but who knows what she managed to find since I've been trying to leave her out of the crate more when I'm not in the room. She's about 8½ months now so I've been trying to give her a little more freedom so that she can eventually stay out all the time. The main reason I put her up when I can't watch her is her ability to find everything and put it in her mouth. I guess it's time for some fall cleaning to make sure there's nothing else she can get ahold of.

If she has a habit of eating everything a muzzle would probably be kinder than a crate. A friend of mine kept his dog in the crate too much and as a boredom effect it developed pica (sp) where it eats everything it can fit in it's mouth, she has to wear a muzzle at all times now. Which does lead to some very funny moments. I spotted her left outside the supermarket, and went running up and was hugging her and giving belly rubs. of course doing that to a malmute in a muzzle made people give me very funny looks, but she's not vicious. just will eat anything and stomach pumps are expensive.
As to the runs, start with plain food, chicken and rice is the classic, but anything bland and low fat would do. I had terrible trouble with my dog, she had constant runs for 2-3 months, she did fine on chicken/rice or on the special food from the vets for animals with issues, but no commercial brand worked, even the little treats would set her off. So I'm hoping yours just got hold of something she shouldn't, or picked up a virus or something!

She's not in the crate for long periods of time except for sleeping at night. I used to have to put her up every time I left the room when she was little, but now I can at least make the bed and leave her in the living room. And I would literally put her in, go do what I had to do and get her back out. I think it defeats the purpose of having a dog inside if they are crated the whole time. We're working on letting her into more parts of the house so I just need to be more vigilant about making sure there's nothing bad that she can get ahold of.
She had a late lunch of chicken and rice and she didn't hesitate this time about eating it. The whole time I was shredding the chicken she was watching me and I was telling her not to get used to it. Since she's been 100% better today I think she had to have eaten something or like you said had a virus. She's been on the same food for months now so I would think that it would have caused problems before now. At least I hope it would have, I'd hate to have to go through the dog food search again. I swear I can tell you what's in the foods without even reading the bag now since I spent about a week researching to make sure we got her started on the best food that we could afford.

Just wanted to update that Luna has been fine since that one day. She's back on her regular food and feeling good. I've also made sure that there's nothing on the floor for her to discover, which included moving all the furniture and sweeping because I swear she's part anteater or something. The sounds she makes when there's something under the couch that she wants is hilarious. It sounds like she is blowing her nose or something. I've never had a dog snort and carry on as much as she does.

KyMama, you didn't by chance recently give Luna a flea/tick pill did you before the diarrhea started?

Glad she's feeling better. Sometimes, dogs just catch a 24 hr. virus, same as people. You may never know what caused her issues, but at least she's over them!
