I came home with 50 more baby chicks & 5 more ducks. I got 7 ISA brown, 18 Ameracauna, 10 Black Sex Link, 5 Black Astralorp, 10 Bantams, & 5 more Rouen ducks. That brings my total chicks to 103 including the Bantams. My 100 Cornish Cross broilers are coming next week. I am still waiting on turkeys to get in.

Ohh, I think I'm going to faint.....
Is there a lot of peeping? And extreme fluffiness? And teeny little chicken squabbles?
*swoon*

I sit on the deck with coffee and call it "Chicken Theatre,' watching the chicken run entertainment, waiting for chicks to hatch. Today I caught sight of "Hancock," the expectant father, watching me out of the coop window. Does he call it "Owner Theatre?" Attachments:

Wendy, do you sell a lot of eggs, and if yes, how much do you get for a dozen? I know you bake a lot, but with that many hens it sounds like you'll be drowning in eggs by summers end! LOL

Wendy, what do you do with your chickens? Meat birds, eggs, selling chicks...?

Yes, I sell eggs. I get $2 a dozen, but may raise it soon.
I keep plenty on hand for eggs, but also sell my layers to Mexicans who prefer them over cornish cross. I raise cornish cross to butcher & sell a lot of those & also keep some for us. I also raise ducks to butcher.

Stopped by tractor supply today, they had some barred rocks on clearance for $1 each, so I bought the last 16 they had. They also had some assorted banties for a buck each. My daughter was with me and she asked me to buy her two of them. So I bought 5.

Why are chickens so darned addicting? For me, although I do love the chicks, I also love the adult birds. I get a lot of free ones from CL when they are 2 or 3 years old and the owners are replacing them. I find them endlessly fascinating and spend hours watching them. I am a little sad this year because I wanted to get some new-to-me breeds but cannot find them close enough, reasonably-priced enough, or in the small quantities I want. So, have pretty much decided that I will stick with what I have for this year (unless something changes) I am going to try out the incubators which we bought 6-7 years ago and have never used. I guess I will practice with them this year and try to get my new breeds next year. I may still pick up some buckeyes from a breeder here in MN if I am ever down his way (3 hours from me) when he has some chicks available. In the meantime, I am living vicariously through all of the posts here.

Years ago we had laying hens. So this year we decided to jump in with both feet. we got 16 Cornish cross. People keep telling me that they will be delicious; but we are having trouble getting past how ugly they are. Ours are now 4 weeks old. But they are growing fast. Our chickens are sharing a pen with a ewe and lamb separate by a wire fence. But the chickens are getting lots of exercise checking out the activity. They like to peck the ewe's face when she gets close. She doesn't seem to mind.
Then two weeks ago we got 2 black silkie banties (so cute). then last week we got our layers - 2 auracana, 2 buff and 2 barred plymouth rock. We will be checking on CL in a couple of months looking for an unwanted rooster. In fact I got a call last week someone wanted to give us a Rhode Island Red rooster, but we passed on that. These chicks are still in the brooder in our garage. And my DH is working on our chicken coop as I type. He will have it done before the chickens can go out.
New books to read now. We have Storey's guide to chickens and Jackie Clay's chicken book. Susan

I am intentionally NOT going to my feed store this week until I know that al of their Guinea Keets are gone!!! I am terrible with those little beggars, I would buy the whole lot if I could get away with it! But alas, my need for feed may exceed my need to not purchase baby Keets today...sigh, gotta get a brooder ready.
