The patterns are all pretty standard and will work for whatever fabric you like. 30s repros would make a sweet quilt and I have some CW repros that need to be used.

calicokatie1, I just saw your post about the Ocean Wave quilt. I have never made one that complicated which that is not the word for it. I have been doing my own patterns the last 4 I have made. As far as making blocks I am not sure I could do more than one a month. I have many other things to do but I do like challenges!! Would this be by hand or machine? I could either .

I did a mystery many years ago that made an Ocean Wave. It got put back and I never finished it but maybe this is the year. If we do a quiltalong, it's your choice on hand or machine sewing the blocks. Sometimes I really enjoy hand piecing but most of the time I just want to get 'em done.

calicokatie1 ,@kiwifarmgal , farmchix , dustawaits , joanie , So, here's the question. Does anyone want to do any of the challenges as a sew along? We could start the 365 block challenge and if we can't keep up, we can turn it into a wallhanging. (That's what I am thinking about doing.) We can keep each other motivated. I'd love to do the 365 block as a challenge and keep you company Farmchix, but I'm behind about 3-4 quilts at the moment and need to get those started/finished. Apart from the HSF block I did a few weeks ago, I haven't touched my machine for quilting for months - been preoccupied on a big external project. I sure miss quilting... Thinking laterally, I could incorporate some of the 365 blocks into one of the quilts on my agenda... Will give it some serious thought over the next 2 days and get back to you. Edit: I signed up for the daily emails...

I love the older quilt patterns. I have a big box of patterns put in notebooks. What I like about some of the patterns you can take one pattern and by changing the way the colors go together you can get maybe 3 patterns out of one.

Well, dippity doo dah! I had been watching for Quiltbug's New Year's Day mystery and as soon as I quit watching, they posted it! It starts this morning and goes through tomorrow afternoon. quiltbug.com/blooming-rails.htmI'm almost finished with Merry Mayhem's second clue. I'm sort of regretting one color choice but that's what these little mysteries are about. Find something that's been hanging out in your stash too long and use it up. Is anyone else making one of these mysteries?

I'm doing the Merry Mayhem in the smallest size. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

I'm making the medium size, 64"x 80". If I add about 3" to the border, it will be a nice twin size or a skimpy double. I think this is going to be a pretty pattern when it's done.

I'm sure glad that I didn't cut out my background fabric for this mystery. I don't care for the setting on this one so, sometime down the road, I'll do something different with the blocks I made. Quilt Doodle has posted their January blocks and this is going to be a beautiful quilt. www.quiltdoodledesigns.com/BOM-2017.html

Another one day quilt mystery will be held the day of the Superbowl by Homespun Hearth. You have to register for it and they will email the first clue which gives the fabric requirements and cutting instructions. The finished size is 60"x 74" and that includes the border. The only thing that gives me pause is that you have to cut 64 1" squares. Huh. Everything else looks pretty simple ... but 1" squares. Really? That would finish to 1/2" squares. Huh. www.homespunhearth.com/detail.asp?Product_ID=ZPD-Superbowl-2017

I first thought we could just post in the Quiltalongs thread but it really does need it's own. I just started a 17 in '17 thread to keep it all together. So blow the dust off your sewing machine farmchix and start your list. Remember the car race scene in Grease? I just got a mental image of a bunch of ladies sitting at their sewing machines at the starting line and revving their foot pedals. Yeah, I think it's time for another cup of coffee while I work on my list.

Another gorgeous quiltalong with freepatterns is starting! I've been looking at it and revising a few of the patterns to suit myself. Instead of 8 teensy 3" Shoofly blocks in a column that measures 6"x 12", I'd make a couple of 6" blocks and stack 'em up. It might not be quite as cute but it would save my sanity. ivoryspring.wordpress.com/2017/01/16/happy-monday-sew-along-scrappy-mystery-this-and-that/After browsing through Wendy's blog with all her freebies and the Podunk Pretties blog, I feel re-energized. I'm going to make some stitching progress today!

Thanks for the links The McCall's one was particularly great - I took a fancy to the Misty Pines quilt so have bookmarked all the tutorials on that. Choosing the fabrics will be the hard thing, but by the time I get an opportunity to make it I'll be able to go round the quilt stores and find something suitable. I'm still saving the 365 day block patterns and took time yesterday to ponder what colour scheme I'd do it in IF I ever take this quilt on. Liked a few of the colour suggestions they give and am wavering. I liked the subdued pink/green example, also the blue and brown one, but I'm already working on a UFO in that palette. Always wanted to do a blue and yellow quilt, so perhaps that's another possibility. My main issue at the moment is knowing where on earth to start back on my projects. I desperately want to resume regular quilting but all the projects are high priority and I can't settle enough to decide on one. Probably the one that requires the least work to finish would be a start (the Shakespeare in the Park one). Only have 2 tiny rows to attach to the body of the quilt (it's pieced on the diagonal and these are the teeny tiny right hand corner ones), and the blocks are all done for it. But for some reason I just can't get motivated. Starting a new year seems so full of promise but when I think about all of the projects that are in my mind to do (quilty and non-quilty) it just seems overwhelming and I end up beginning nothing. Big sigh. Intellectually I know just to pick one and get going, but it's hard to do when everything seems to have the same level of urgency/importance. Someone give me a swift kick please.....

No stress, kiwi gal, this is supposed to be fun. I have to remind myself of that every now and then. What makes the high priority projects so urgent? If they're things that you were selling and have already accepted money for, then it's a job and you have to treat it that way. Set aside a block of time each week and work on the job items according to their deadline. Grit your teeth if you have to.
If your projects are not a job, the only deadline you have is what you have set for yourself. You know what that means? You are the Quilting Empress with all the power. Work on what makes you happy - not on what you think you need to. So here is what I suggest...
Take the time to go through all these projects and sort them into two groups. Group 1 will be all the things that make you happy to look at. The patterns lighten your heart and the colors soothe your spirit. Group 2 will be everything else. Everything that makes you feel anxious and overwhelmed. Do NOT make a 'maybe' stack. There is no such thing as maybe. If you have to hesitate and think about it, then it goes into Group 2.
Next, put all of group 2 into a box (or boxes) and tape them shut. Tightly shut. Pick a date four to six months in the future and on top of each box write, "To be opened on ..."whatever the date is. The next step is very important, put that burden in a basement, attic, outdoor shed or wherever it will be out of your sight. No room? Ask family or friends if they have a place you can store it for a few months.
Mark the date on your calendar and when the time comes, open the box and go through everything again, making two groups. If you feel renewed interest, into group 1 it goes. If you have the same reaction you had when you boxed it up, group 2. This time, either sell or give away everything in group 2. It had it's chance and it's day is over. Group 1 gets to come out to play.
I can tell you what gave me a swift kick. Last year I had cancer. It wasn't a very big deal because I breezed through the treatment. It did give me some things to think about. To begin with, I needed to make the quilts for the kids that I kept meaning to and that would solve the other issue. It would be cruel of me to leave all the fabrics and sewing supplies that I've accumulated during the last 35 years for my children to dispose of after I die. They would have no idea what to do with all this stuff and it would overwhelm them to deal with it. It even overwhelms me sometimes!
I'm not being morbid, I have plenty of years left to enjoy my goodies. I just got the kick I needed to start using all these pretty things.

Oh that was really great advice calicokatie1. I don't have a huge stack of UFOs - more un-started quilts I've promised friends. But there are a few UFOs that I'd like to work on - one being an American Civil War quilt (think appliqued soldiers, horses etc) for DH - this has been one that I've kept putting to nearly the bottom of the UFO pile because I've been working on projects for others. Not good, and in line with my goal this year of devoting more time to home and DH, I need to bring it up the list. I get what you mean about the swift kick. Although not a cancer scare, I did have a big health one just recently and it concentrates the mind on things that are important - the kind that you say yep, need to do that in case something happens to me. Like updating wills, decluttering, making sure that you don't take on any more projects until you finish what's already on your plate. Good to hear that advice from someone who's been through it. So with that in mind, my task today is to clear my quilt area (yet again - it keeps getting over-run with paperwork that migrates from one side of my computer/work area to the other. Then grab that Shakespeare in the Park top and get it finished and ironed ready to go to the LAQ. I'll report on progress in a couple of days. If you don't hear from me, give me another kick, LOL.

That CW quilt sounds wonderful. Definitely worth putting at the top of the list. I think Barbara Brackman's new BOM will be similar as it will be a combination of pieced and applique. The first block will be posted on Wednesday and I have some CW repros ready to start cutting.
Through the years I've had people ask me to make them a quilt. My standard response was that I would help them make one. Strangely enough, no one ever took me up on my offer.

Morning Glory Designs has a really pretty BOM. Read all the details to be sure you get all the patterns. It is a 14 month project and the blocks are only free for the first month they're posted. If you subscribe to her newsletter, you'll receive bonus blocks. She shows hers in all blues but I'm wondering how it would look in all reds. Or...make the connector blocks in black with the monthly blocks in shades of pink. So many choices! blog.morningglorydesigns.net/p/2017-bom.html

I immediately wanted to sign up for the patterns but I stopped myself from getting distracted and remembered what my goals for this year are. You need to stop tempting me!!!! (Read "please don't stop tempting me" LOL). So are you going to make it calicokatie1?

People don't ask me to make them a quilt - I volunteer one before they get a chance, LOL. But I have volunteered to teach a new friend how to quilt. I sent her off to look at patterns online so I can get a feel for the type of quilt and colour schemes she likes. May as well work on something she's going to love while learning the 'how-to' bit. The CW quilt I'm working on for DH is one from Barbara Brackman's "Quilts from the Civil War" book, and called Blue and Gray Battle Quilt.

I'm really tempted to do the Morning Glory BOM. I'm going to collect all the patterns and see where I am in a few months. I like the idea of making the connector blocks in black on white with the monthly blocks in shades of pink. That's today - next month I might change to an Irish forty shades of green color scheme..
Since I've set a very busy goal for myself this year, I have to be careful about getting distracted by anything that would be very time consuming. I am committed to making the Yankee Diary quilt but that's one block a month. I know of another BOM that will hopefully get started in the next few weeks and I'm planning to do that one. I'll be collecting the patterns from several others for future consideration but it's unlikely I'll do many of them.

It even overwhelms me sometimes! ^^^This^^^ I have been thinking of this thread since my post about not participating and just cheering you on. As I have been packing up my sewing/craft room the last few days, and hauling it all out to the shop, to be stored, I am overwhelmed with all that I have!! I could, literally, start my own store with all I have. How did I fit it all in here?? Several months ago I did start to go thru my craft books and quilting magazines and weed some out with the thought of downsizing. Now I know, I must downsize! I was diagnosed with cancer in Oct 2014 and while I didn't breeze thru my treatments (but glad you did!) I started to have the same thoughts. I have managed to carve out a small corner in my sunroom where I can put my sewing machine, a metal bookcase to hold some material and patterns and yarn. My plan is to work on what I have on the bookcase first and then head to the shop to find more and bring them inside. As I have been packing up I am trying to put some of the UFO's within reach. As this situation proceeds I am hoping that we can get into a routine which will still give me time to create. So I am joining you in this challenge!! Oops! I put this in the wrong thread! Should have been the 17 in 17 challenge.
