Anyone growing ginger this season? I started off a dozen in the hoop house today at my daughters request. I hand picked some nice small pieces at the grocery store and planted them into 3 gallon pots. Plan to keep them in the hoop house until they sprout and plant out when soil temps climb into the 70s. Did this back in 13' and got some nice clumps I'm no fan, but my Daughter uses a lot of it and said fresh from the garden ginger is the best she's ever had. Here's a pic of a 9-10oz clump

Trying. I've had some in a pot in the window sill for 2 months and nothing. Think I'm doing something wrong. I'm hoping warm weather makes it sprout.

Trying. I've had some in a pot in the window sill for 2 months and nothing. Think I'm doing something wrong. I'm hoping warm weather makes it sprout. I've only grown it once before, but remember the first signs of growth taking approx. 3-4 weeks. Those were started off in March/harvested in late October and had a yield of about 7:1 after 6-7 months growth. I've read a good yield would be around 15:1. Timing this year is even later, as I just got the request last week and the seed pieces are on the small side ... best I can hope for is baby ginger, but still worth experimenting with Attached are my cut/pasted growing notes...might help? Ginger Notes Start (February) with 2-4oz rhizomes with at least 2-4 well developed eyes Soak the rhizome "seed-pieces" in a 10% household bleach solution for 10 min. Allow to air dry/cure thoroughly for at least 1 day Soak in water for 1 day Plant flat in loose well draining soil high in OM, cover with 1" of soil Ideal growing temps 75*-85* Heavy feeder- feed with nitrogen thru July, potassium thru harvest Likes partial/filtered sun As rhizomes grow they are upwards expanding, cover them gradually (like taters) with compost/sand mix Doesn't compete well with weeds Roots mature in 8-10 months

I'd like to try some this year. How do you store it once it's harvested. It seems like the pieces I buy at the grocery store don't last that long for me.

My daughter stores enough for a 2-3 week supply in the crisper drawer of the fridge in a zip-loc. The rest she freezes in small portions in vac sealed bags. Hope to figure out how to properly overwinter a few rhizomes for seed pieces from this growout, my first attempt dehydrated too quick

I forwarded that link over to my daughter, she's looking forward to trying it out using Vodka...Thanks Feather We have a nearby Amish Farmers market that sells candied ginger www.food.com/recipe/candied-ginger-and-syrup-123111Kinda hot and sweet at the same time, supposedly very good for an upset stomach
