And yeah, I'm still a bit of a mess right now. This was totally unexpected. I found his body under one of the hanging feeders this morning. No signs of fighting, etc. He would have been 6 this Spring so I guess for a chicken - he had a good run... I wrote about him here last year... homesteadingfamilies.proboards.com/thread/4515/rooster-goose-stepping-boyDefinitely going to miss him... He was such a sweet guy...

Condolences Mari, I know you love birds and your chickens especially, since you've raised them all and know them so well. Hopefully, you will feel better soon and another will fill the void he has left in your flock. Cheer up soon!!!

Oh no Mari-in-IN, so sorry to hear this news, yes 6 is a good life span for your roo and I am sure they were 6 wonderful years for both of you, because no one really takes birds like these to vets so much is unknown about their organs and health issues, I do hope he went peacefully and without pain. Hugs to you my friend!!

Mari-in-IN, I'm so awfully sorry about your boy. What a beautiful photo of such a proud, handsome fella. That he was a sweet guy makes it all that harder as well. Sending you a big cyber hug. I know he'll be very much missed.

Thanks @deerjohn, Woodpecker, shellymay, mzgarden,@kiwifarmgal, Your kind words do mean the world to me. DH was home a little early tonight and thank goodness - he was able to dig a hole for Mr. Rooster... It has been very cold here - 1.9 degrees the last two mornings... Today's high was around 7 degrees... We did have an early snowfall and so far it has insulated the ground to where he could actually dig. It just totally tore me up when I laid him in that hole... But it is so therapeutic coming on here and thanking and "talking" to my friends... Thanks for being "here" for me... Take care all, Mari

Very sorry for your losing him now. You are lucky your DH could dig that grave; here in central WI we have 9" on the ground and 10-" more coming (I do love winter but no digging now).

Mari-in-IN , I'm so sorry for your loss. He was a handsome fellow indeed! I lost two birds the other day from the cold here, they were frizzles, just can't take the cold winds...

He was an elderly gentleman. I don’t know where you are, but sudden freezing temps are hard on the old ones. May he rest in peace.

Mari-in-IN, Oh no...Not another loss! I'm so sorry. It's sure harder when they stand out with so much extra personality;not to mention you having fewer roos. He sure had a great life though and you have terrific pictures to remember him from. I assume that "goose stepping" never seemed to hurt him and it sure makes me smile to look at those. I'll bet rooster spirits are lined up all chattering to God like crazy to let them be the next one hatched at Your place!!!

So sorry for your loss, Mari. I'm sure you're going to miss him. But he had a wonderful life with you. Do you by any chance have any of his sons to take over the flock? Sending cyber hugs your way.

I just want to thank you, @deerjohn, Woodpecker, shellymay, mzgarden,@kiwifarmgal, here to stay, solargeek, shin, farmchix, horseyrider, aoconnor, mollymckee, Maura, hobbitlady, countrymom22, once again for your kind words and compliments... It's so weird him not being here. He always put a smile on my face when he was highsteppin' around... Had a few teary moments today but nothing compared to what I went through yesterday. I don't think his death had anything to do with temps. They have been in the coop for about a week now due to this awful weather we've been having. I have had heat lamps on and I monitor the temps in here with wireless sensors. They have good ventilation-not drafty though. I pay attention to the forecast (temps/wind speed/wind direction) and close/crack open windows and sliders accordingly. The temp sensor is probably in the coldest area of the coop and it has been anywhere from 30-42 degrees in there. Haven't had trouble with waterers freezing in this coop-thank goodness! I have enough to do without dragging them to the house to thaw them out! I just wonder if it was indeed old age? I don't know. When I called my DH at work to tell him he was just as shocked as I was. No previous indications of sickness, etc. We've only had 2 other roosters pass away and it was the same deal-no indication of sickness. Just a complete and utter shock. Now, with the girls - most of the time you see it coming... DH also wondered it if had anything to do with his size - he was a very big boy. I'm pretty sure that Fella Jr. may have been fathered by Mr. Rooster. (Yeah, I used that name again - when this one had a goofy personality and gave no trouble just like Fella Sr., I couldn't resist) May have to drag that flick out tonight-"Cinderfella". Well, anyhoo, he is the youngest roo in there but seems to be at the top now that Mr. Rooster is gone. It's kind of funny - I don't see him acting aggressive towards the other roos -but they seem to be wary of him... Fella Sr. takes off in the other direction if he gets too close to him. BTW, Fella Jr. used to live in the storage room of this coop but integrated himself into the main area over time... Oh, duh, I just remembered I started a thread awhile ago with some other pics of him... homesteadingfamilies.proboards.com/thread/6712/fella-crows-forked-beak-updateNo more beak issues I'm happy to report! Sorry to be so long-winded.. But, hey, that's me! I do so enjoy this place and I do so appreciate my "cyber-friends". You guys mean the world to me! Take care all, Mari

Oh he's handsome too. Just a bit less stately than Mr. Rooster but maybe that comes with age?

If Fella Jr has a great personality and is none aggressive towards you then I think it's gonna be great him taking charge as top roo, If he is an offspring of Mr Rooster then even better as you know what kind of bloodline he had

Well, I was sadly mistaken thinking that Fella Jr. had become "top cock". For a week or so after Mr. Rooster died everything seemed fine within the coop. Well, evidently Fella Jr. and the nasty Ameraucana rooster (obtained in 2011) had been keeping to themselves until about a week ago. One morning I went out there to an absolutely nasty mess. Fella Jr. kept trying to pick a fight with the Ameraucana and he was not winning! The smell just about turned my stomach as I carried him back to the storage room of the coop. Cleaned him up as best I could/electrolytes in his water/secured the piece of snow fence so he could not jump back in to the main part of the coop. These roosters make me crazy! Major sigh... Whaddya do... ~Mari

Mari-in-IN, oh dear - poor Fella Jr - glad you were able to tend his wounds and make him safe. Mr Ameraucana must have looked at him funny... Hope he's back to full health again soon. Can you give him a lady-friend to keep him company?

Mari-in-IN , oh dear - poor Fella Jr - glad you were able to tend his wounds and make him safe. Mr Ameraucana must have looked at him funny... Hope he's back to full health again soon. Can you give him a lady-friend to keep him company? Funny you should say that... When I gave Fella Jr. free reign (basically letting him come and go as he pleased from the storage room into the coop) some of the hens had been sneaking into the storage room and were laying eggs underneath a shovel - which I discovered at a later date. Now, since I have partitioned him off with the snow fence - some of those little wenches have figured out how to drop off of the step to get into there and lay their eggs - thus giving him a little bit of female companionship until I open up in the AM and shoo them back into the main part of the coop after opening up the snow fence! As far as Mr. Ameraucana - he is a right b-word in his own right and has given me trouble for years... One of those honyocks that acts SO innocent until you turn your back on him. I've set him straight in the past but it's funny - thinking of last summer when Daniel would visit me out at the coops and this piece of work would just love it - Daniel would often "pussyfoot" around him and it would just set him off... I, however, have asserted myself and have not had any trouble out of him for about 2 years now... ETA-but I still don't turn my back on him! ~Mari
