Okay all, We just moved to our "retirement home" and I want to make some curtains (We aren't retiring or near it...but planning ahead by getting out of town and moving to a smaller house, with main floor master. Still have kids at home, so this will be a long slow project....possible over a few years....unless I can get the sewing bug to bite DD ). Not exactly sure what I want or what my budget will be for them...or how many I'll make, lol. BUT...I do know that fabric choices locally are not so good. I have Wal-Mart and Jo-Ann Fabrics. We aren't too far from "Amish Country" so I could head that way looking....but not likely to do so in the next few months....and I'm itching to sew them now.
So, where do you all look online? What sites have good pictures? Not overly blemished fabric? Will likely still have the fabric for a re-order a few months later so I can do more rooms? etc?? I'm leaning towards a rustic look.....am considering making wooden valances - if that makes a difference.
Any hints and tip would be appreciated. Up to this point the only fabric I have honestly worked with was cheap cotton. I would buy the $1 a yard stuff from Wal-Mart to make jumpers/dresses for DD when she was small. For $1.50 she couldn't damage them enough to worry about it....and she wanted dresses to wear and play in, not pants, lol. I also buy flannel sheets from Goodwill to make sleep pants for everyone. So obviously I don't even know what "kind" of fabric I should buy for curtains! First ones I plan to make are for the side door into the mudroom and the door from the mudroom to the kitchen (matching). If I like how it comes out then I'll want to do the 2 mudroom windows with the same or similar/complimentary fabric. And nope....no idea on what pattern/ look I'm thinking of using (heading to Pinterest next). The doors won't get wooden valances, which is why I'm starting with them.
