Meredithe at Pomegranate and Chintz had a great idea to help us take control of those UFOs so many of us have stuffed back through the years. Make a list of the projects you would most like to finish and concentrate on those during the coming year. pomegranateandchintz.wordpress.com/17-ufos-in-2017Sign up and post your progress in this thread so we can cheer each other on. My oldest grandchild is 24 and I have a few things that are older than he is! Yeah, I guess it's time to finish those up. So search around under your bed and the top of your closets. Pull out those bags, boxes and tubs that have been trying to get your attention. Digging through all those treasures is a trip down memory lane. I'm working on my list and should have it ready to post soon.

Geez, I have way more than 17!! I will be cheering you on tho!! I will not be able to participate as I have life altering events happening right now that may last a year or more. I will no longer have any down time to sew, quilt, crochet, knit, or weave.
Good luck to everyone who participates!! Rev up those foot pedals!!

You sound a lot more organized than I am, dw. I'm hoping to get better about that. Sorry you won't be able to join us Billie. Maybe you can jump in down the road. I hope everything turns out well.
My goal this year is to make a quilt for each of my kids and their spouses, and the oldest grandkids. Most will be bed size and will be given on or near their birthdays. I also plan to make a lap size Christmas quilt for each family. I have three tops made that are pin basted and ready to quilt on a hoop. I need to make three more and I have the fabrics cut into squares ready to sew those together.
My first UFO will be a Double Irish Chain. I haven't actually started it yet but it's a UFO because I've had the fabric for it set aside for years. Much as I like the fabric, I would never use it for anything else. It was an Irish Chain or nothing! I expect to start work on it by Monday. It must be finished by the first week of March. The second quilt must be finished by March 20th so I'll be hustling.
Other than this one, the other birthday quilts will be made from tops and blocks that I already have. I'll report on my progress and tell you about each quilt as I start it.
Okay, who's next?

I don’t have that many, but I do have a few. I have been looking at one I started years ago and would like to put it together. I have a baby quilt to put together for #8, that takes priority. It has already taken me three weeks to get started. I began with a really cool polyhedra, but it proved to be too difficult. Then, I switched to a spinning square. Turns out the block was actually computer generated and not really a block. Still, I’ve figured it out and am working on it. Piecing by hand.

I really enjoy hand piecing, Maura. Mostly I hand piece patterns that need templates. It's surprising how quickly you can make an entire quilt top just by working on it for a little while every day. I was all set yesterday morning to settle in and sew all day. Apparently my spell of bad luck continues though because by last night I was looking at an estimate for putting in new water and gas lines to my house. The bright side is my oldest grandson said he'd dig the trench and do the backfill. That will save me $1400 in labor charges. He is such a good kid and I appreciate him every day. I think I'll get to do some quilting this afternoon while my new wall furnace is being installed. The old one gave up last week and I've been using space heaters while waiting for the new one to get here. Did I mention I've been having a spell of bad luck?

I'm sitting in a toasty warm house looking at the quilting I got done today. It's the quilt I'm making for my ddil. I only have to quilt one more side of the border then stitch the binding down. Originally I wasn't going to include this in my UFO count because I was working on it before Christmas but I've changed my mind because it is a UFO.
I sewed the binding onto the top when I finished it. When I'm through quilting it, all I have to do is trim the batting and backing even with the quilt edge and whip it around to the back and sew it down. I don't like dealing with the bulky weight of sewing the binding on after it's quilted.
Anybody else work on their UFO list today?

ok i am joining in on the 17 in 17 and will still have UFO'S to do when it is over but i can say i completed one project not a quilt but a set of embroidered pillow cases for oldest daughter that i have been working on for over a year with a bit here and a bit there time now to put together a couple of the quilt tops from the old swaps and thin out the laundry basket of blocks then i can start all the planned ones right.

That sounds great, Pauline! It doesn't have to be a quilting UFO. Just any project that needs to be finished. I have a couple of pillowcases tucked back, too. Haven't gotten that far on them, which is good because one day I'll pick the thread out and start over. I was doing a simple monogram but I want to change the pattern to a vintage floral basket. It's just a pair of inexpensive white cases and I think they should be dressed up more.

I'm in and already made out a list of 17 UFO's that need finished. My house looks like a fabric store exploded as I've been digging and sorting stuff.

Soooooooo..... here are my UFOs, but I'm also including ones I've committed to starting. I figure that planning a quilt is the first step of the process so I can legitimately argue that they're New UFOs, right?? UFOs"Shakespeare in the Park" - needs 2 rows added then machine quilted. DH's American Civil War - 1 block of 4 done so far. "October Sky" - subsituting sheep for geese in the pattern - about half pieced. Desert quilt (old AQS magazine pattern) - needs manky machine basting removed and then nicely machine quilted. Block of the month quilt - project with 2 US friends. 3 blocks to complete, then put together and quilt. Split Rail Fence - remove wrong style border and replace with something that's more appropriate, then machine quilt. Yellow Brick Road quilt - replace terrible border choice, then machine quilt. Kaffe Fasset Workshop quilt - about 1/8th completed Motocross Quilts 1 & 2 - intended for neighbours 2 young boys, but procrastinated so long they've outgrown the pattern. Will be charity quilts. New UFOsQuilts 1 & 2 for a US friend's children - not started yet. Cat quilt for a NZ friend - not started yet, but I've chosen the pattern. That's 13 projects - which leaves space for 4 more that I've probably forgotten about and stashed somewhere... Hmmmmm, I'd better get a move on...

I’m sorting out my sewing room/junk room and found a baby quilt top that I never finished. This will be one of my UFO’s and fast to finish. Yea! I found the Dresden plates that I had worked on at the other house and I can add that to my UFO pile.

Sounds like everyone is getting off to a good start. I finally found the tub I had a lot of my blocks stored in. Some of these sets are part of my project list but I'll have to make a few extra blocks to have enough in each set.

Let's see if I can get this post in the right thread!
These are my "must finish items":
Wedding shawl (crochet with beads..due mid May) Wedding quilt #1 (main fabric bought...due mid May..same wedding as shawl) Wedding quilt #2 (Ready to be quilted...was due Aug 2015) Wedding quilt #3 (Fabric ready to be cut...was due July 2016) Sports quilt. (Ready to be quilted...was due 3 years ago)
Looks like I will be able to finish several crochet baby blankets in the next week. Bill's dad died yesterday and we leave tomorrow for California. One sister is flying in here tomorrow then we drive to Colorado to pick up another sister then drive to CA. Then drive back to CO to drop that sister off and then to Texas to drop off the one who flew in. Quick stop to see his mom (also in TX) and then home to MO. I have always been able to crochet in the car so I have a lot of miles coming up to do so.
Be back in a couple of weeks.

Hope you have a safe trip to CA. Nice that you've something to keep your hands busy on the way. I like having things to do where I can listen and work at the same time. Take care, and when you get back you can join the rest of us to bust those UFOs.

Woohoo - I've nearly finished the Shakespeare in the Park top. One. More. Seam. I realised once I laid it out that the reason I'd kept putting it away was because I needed to replace one dark/light block with a light/dark one, so I scrounged around and found some small scraps and whipped it up last night. Will get that final seam finished today and it's all ready to be sent out for quilting. It's a big quilt with many, many, many (can't emphasise that enough) seams in it so I'm not even going to contemplate quilting it myself.
Happy, happy, happy...

Way to go, kiwifarmgal! Getting this quilt on the finished list will give you a big boost.
Sorry about Bill's dad, Billie. You have a lot of driving miles ahead but you'll be able to finish all those crochet projects while on the road. I've done some quilting on a hoop while on a road trip. You just don't have room to work on a queen/king.

Way to go, kiwifarmgal! Getting this quilt on the finished list will give you a big boost. Thanks calicokatie1. The top's now done - I stitched the seam down before I went for a haircut and it just needs pressing. Thing is... to finish the top only took me about 2 hours. So my lesson out of all of this is the longer you procrastinate over something, the bigger it gets in your mind. When you finally get it done, more often than not it's a cinch and you wonder why you mucked about in the first place. So with that, I'm now off to decide which of my projects can be completed the quickest, and get stuck in.

Yep, will do - soon as I've got it pressed. :-) It's really a simple quilt to make but it looks complicated because it's set on the diagonal. All it is, is a Snails Trail block and a Star in a Star block. Dead easy.

I am back from our trip. We never made it to CA for the funeral as the funeral is not for another week (Feb 9). His step-mother called while we were traveling and said, "If you can't be here for your dad's special day (the 9th is his birthday) then you might as well turn the car around right now and go home. I don't want you here". So we went on to Grand Junction, CO (where we used to live) and where 2 of Bill's siblings live. Another brother came over from Utah and 5 of the 6 siblings were together. They looked at old photos, laughed, told stories and had their own memorial.
I finished 2 baby blankets and 1 kid size afghan.

I think the word "memorial" is perfect for how your husband and his siblings have handled this situation. It's wonderful that most of them were able to get together and share memories of their father's life. I'm impressed with how productive you were during your trip. It's good to have you back with us.

Billie I am sad his step mother is being so hurtful, but glad he got to be with his siblings. It seems to me that was the best thing after all. Glad you had a good trip!
As to my projects... do they count if they were never begun? I have 2 dresses I need to shorten and find a way to bring in the... bust line. Why do stores assume if you need a 2x you are tall and busty? I am short and not a DD up top yet these dresses fit as if that is who it was made for. I love the style and the dresses just need to figure out how to make it a B size. The hem will be easy the top gives me pause! I have even thought of maybe adding material to the top but can't imagine it in my head in anyway that looks nice.
In the mean time I am knitting dish clothes and planning out aprons.

got a quilt top put together from a swap done on the other board back in fall of 2009 now to get it backed and tied or quilted, so i can check it off as a completed UFO.sewed up a skirt and blouse that was in the same bag as the quilt blocks just need to put buttons or snaps on blouse and it is finished so I am counting the outfit as one project and done.

Wow, Pauline, it sounds like you're on a roll. Good work! I pulled out a quilt the other day that has been put back forever. It only needed half the binding sewn down and I finished it in no time at all. It's such a relief getting some of these things done.
