Botherig Kits?

Ok I have a Real Good Doe. I check Kits right after she has them and every so often. Last night it got real cool. I checked them this evening, she had pulled more hair, they was in a nice warm tight ball, all was Good.

Does it bother checking Kits ever?

Also does your Rabbits get excited to see you? Mine do.

No, checking the kits won't hurt them. If the mother doesn't mind, you are fine. Some mother rabbits get rather aggressive towards anyone reaching in their cage. The mini lop doe I have who currently has a litter use to be quite shy and timid. Since having her kits she has become quite lovey dovey.

A lot depends on Mama's temperment as to how much, if any, that you can handle kits. Typically after kindling I get a head count and remove, if any, dead ones. Then I don't mess with them until about three weeks old when they start hopping out of the box. Just because it is so cold when we can breed the rabbits, I don't want the young'uns to catch a chill.

I've always heard stories about how the mamas can become canniballistic if you handle the babies but I've NEVER seen it in my rabbits. Maybe wild rabbits??? I don't know.

I like to count them after birth & get rid of any dead ones. After that I just peek in the box once in awhile. I have one doe that will come at me with claws & teeth!

Is she a NZW by any chance?  Mine were good mothers, but had nasty dispositions!  I ended up culling for temperament.

No, she is a mutt. Brown in color. Excellent mother. Raises 8-10 kits every time.

Mine is NZW. She is a Good Mama, she will fuss at me but never give me trouble.
