I couldn't decide whether to put this thread on the Rabbits board or companion animals. I figured it went here. We have a house rabbit, named "Rabbit." He was dropped off around here sometime in September by an owl. Had marks on his side. We have a lot of owls here and have heard them many times late at night right after hearing a rabbit scream. Then "hoo hoo". I guess that means it was good catch. My husband comes in one morning and tells me I'd never guess what was in the barn. A white rabbit. I asked him if he was sure it wasn't a cat. Nope. He took me out there and sure enough. A white rabbit with a brown face, ears and paws. Someone told me it was a Californian. I didn't know because we don't raise any. He withstood most of this very extremely cold winter in our barn. He would never let me catch him after I grabbed him once to check if he was boy or a girl. He always met my husband on the path to get some greens and other things we found to feed him. His wound healed and he thrived. But he would go out in the forest and sometimes be away for a night. I'd pray for him every night. Especially when I heard the coyotes out back. One day, after a 10 below zero night, I caught a hold of him and brought him inside. Well he loves being in the house. Appears very happy and playful. We took him to the vet's and had him neutered. No more spraying or trying to hump our cats. He has a cage that he goes in and out of on his own, plus a separate box that I put out for his litter box. He eats in that one and hangs out and sleeps in it off and on through out the day. He only uses the litter box inside the cage for doing his business. I didn't train him. He did it on his own. We are having so much fun with this little guy. I never thought about having a pet rabbit. In fact, we had decided when the pets we have die, we wouldn't be replacing any. Well he stole even my husband's heart (the reason we decided not to have any more pets was due to him, not me). He is really good, doesn't chew wires like everyone says they do. He likes to chew firewood, and we have plenty. He was really good friends with my horse, Georgie Girl, as you can see here.

That is a great story, and what a fun pet! I have a friend who also has a house rabbit that she saved from injury. His name is Dinner, but I doubt they'll ever eat him.

My DB and SIL Have house rabbits, as my SIL is allergic to dogs and cats. They have cute little mini's that are house broken and darling.

That is a really great story. I have a friend at church who has house rabbits, the really big ones, Flemish Giants I think they are called, and also angoras. Rabbits all over her house. The rabbits are well taken care of, and her house is neat and clean. She is a kind of eccentric-type person. She sure loves those rabbits.
Years ago, we had 2 Netherland Dwarf rabbits in the house. They are really nice pets. Their droppings and litter made good compost for the garden.

NEVER!!! They are too adorable for that. Funny thing is some of my Facebook friends who raise them for meat were (and still are) amazed that they make such great pets.
There are so many different kinds! I became a friend on the House Rabbit Society on Facebook and I never so many different colors and varieties of rabbits.
The best pets! We laugh all night long at Rabbit. He sleeps in the day when we are on our computers. I don't know if he is bored with them or what. Sometimes I play music on my Kindle at night and he gets real quiet and listens. His favorite so far is Sammy Davis Jr. singing Mr. Bojangles.

I once had a huge black male rabbit in a huge cage out in the yard. One afternoon while I was tinkering out there a good way from his hutch, I looked behind me and there was thumper. I gave him a scratch and he hopped off back to his cage. I found a hole in his floor, he'd probbaly been coming and going as he pleased for years. Once I knoew he was getting out I saw him actually out more often since I was looking for him. he was happy for a good many yrs that way.

We were driving through a nearby State Park near the end of October on year when my DH spotted a odd colored bunny . We stopped and using some corn nuts we had in the car I got her to come to me. We had her for a year, then my GS asked if he could have her for a 4H project. She was his pet for years. Either someone dumped her at the part or she escaped, but no one was looking for her so I'm guessing she was dumped.

We've got a house bunny, too. It's a little Jersey Wooly buck named Boo. He's suppose to be my son's, but honestly I think I'm just as attached as he is. Sometimes Boo amazes me with his personality and his intelligence. The little stinker is an expert at escaping from his cage and playpen area, and loves to tease the dogs when he runs free.

We had a house rabbit for about 10 years. He stayed in the basement (which is where our children spend most of our time and we did most of our home educating down there), and the cats stayed on the main level. The few times the cats got in the basement they didn't bother the rabbit. But we had to make sure all electrical cords were hidden or well protected as he would chew them up! They do make great pets.

He gets along fine with our two cats. We had decided that we would not be getting any more new pets. He just moved in the barn on his own. Then I brought him inside when I finally caught him, took months. He is so easy to care for. Every day I clean his litter box and he uses the same spot, so it is easy to clean. I have never had him touch any of the wires except when he first came in, he checked everything in the house out. As long as we put out a piece of firewood on the hearth, that is all he ever chews on. He is pretty strong so he can even move it around a bit. Eats hay, sleeps in hay and uses hay for litter. I never would have thought of getting a rabbit for a pet.

I think I have made a mistake. I don't think he is a Californian rabbit after all. Someone told me that when they first saw his picture. Today I researched the different breeds and the Californian is white with black. But the Himalayan rabbit can be white with black or brown or lilac or blue points. Our rabbit has brown points. That means he wasn't actually a meat rabbit but more of a show rabbit.

Is he closer to 4.5 lbs or 12? The Himi is much smaller. He doesn't look like a 10 or 12 lb rabbit to me, so you are probably right!

I am still not sure. I sent some articles to my Kindle last night about the Himi and now I don't know if he is one or not. They seem to be much smaller than he is. His personality is more like them though. So whatever he is, I guess I will never know for sure. It doesn't really matter anyway. He isn't 10 or 12 lbs. though. He was 5 when we took him to be neutered back in March.

Now that spring is definitely here, free rabbit food! He loves it when I bring him a box of various things from outside. He especially loves the blackberry canes, that I remove every thorn on it before I give it to him. Yet, I know when he was roaming free last fall he ate the thorns and all. We are having fun with this little guy,
