Yesterday afternoon late I was filling a water tank by my barn. I peeked around the corner (the tank is on one end of my barn, I was working at the other end) after a while of running the water, and saw one of my good hens FLOATING in the top of the now full tank. I ran over and grabbed her out of the tank, she was soaked and very lethargic, barely moving or responding to stimuli. She had to have been in the water all day long to be that soaked and cold. I got her into my feed room, tried to dry her a bit there, but very quickly knew I was fighting to save her life and ran her up to the house. I whipped into our bedroom where my hubby was watching BB, and went right into the bath room, grabbed our hair dryer, and got on the floor with my hen on a horse saddle pad. I blew dry that hen for almost 20 minutes, on low, slowly moving the dryer over her and fluffing feathers up with my free hand while I worked. She was pretty dead, but once in a while would peek an eye open and then it would close again. She was barely breathing, and when she did breath it was a gasp.
After getting her as dry as I could, I wrapped her in a thick towel, placed her on another towel on the bottom shelf of my linen closet, and then tucked in yet another thick hand towel to keep her warm. We went off to church, where my husband promptly told everyone I was so rusty using the oven that I tried cooking his dinner with a hair dryer. I could have killed him, but laughed with everyone else because it really was pretty funny at that point:-)
We got home, and I went in to take a peek. She was much more alert, talked to me when I opened the cabinet door. She had gotten up on top of the towels that were wrapped around her somewhat and was sitting contentedly. I picked her up, she didn't fuss but wasn't happy about being held, and I carried her down to my little feed room flock that she belongs to. She happily nestled in with them and when I left she was talking away, telling the other 5 chickens in that room all about her big adventure. This morning she was fine, and she came in tonight seeming to be all over her ordeal. I went in the bathroom this morning to get the towels out that I had left her with to get warm last night, and lo and behold, she had rewarded my life saving efforts by laying me an egg while we had been at church:-)
I'm so glad I have a very understanding husband, he barely bats an eye anymore at my menagerie of animals who live here. Blow drying a chicken on our bath room floor is just par for the course:-)
