I admire you for sticking with it. IT takes a tenacious personality! I think I'll read one this week while I'm on bedrest

Thank you so much. It has been a long and winding road. On the plus side, it has been an amazing creative outlet this whole time and life provides enough crazy storylines that I'll be able to write for many, many years without lack of content. I hope you enjoy whichever one you pick, and I hope you recover quickly.

TIL that I had forgotten a sure sign of spring - bear poop in the front yard. Conventional wisdom says they do that in the woods. Up here, they poop in Sue's front yard.
At least I didn't step in it...this time. The season is young, though.

TIL that with a good enough plan, you can get just about anything done. Ahead of schedule.
I also learned that it never pays to be so distracted that you forget the balance in your checking account. Doh!

Today I learned that after over a month of babying more than 100 tomato seedlings, all it takes is a chilly draft for ten minutes to kill them all.

I did learn a couple of years ago that if the roots didn't freeze, you should just leave them in the ground and in no time you'll have big tomato plants again. I had that happen to a couple and the plants turned out just as big as the ones that didn't get frostbitten.

I'll give them some time and see whether they come back to life. Thank you, farmergirl!

You're welcome! I noticed when I went up to pull the ones that I thought were dead - they had strong white shoots coming off the sides of the main root, and the shoots were still firm and healthy.

TIL that I cracked the top 30,000 ranked authors on all of Kindle. This may not seem like a big accomplishment, but there are well over a million authors over there. ... sorry for the shameless self promotion. My husband is sick of hearing about it and I've got to share it with somebody! Congratulations!!!! I have been known to drive my husband crazy at times with talk of gardens, chickens, irrigation, etc. He is working hard, interested and patient until 10:30 pm or so, then he begs for reprieve until morning ? I think his dreams of all the work that needs to be done wears him out, poor guy.

Today I learned that purslane is the best source of omega 3 fatty acids of any leafy plant. The website went so far as to say you never need to buy fish oil supplements if you have a handy source to toss into your salads and stir fry, etc. It also is rich in vit E,C and beta carotene. I got some in an organic soil/composte mix I bought for my raised beds a few years ago and knew it was edible and mild but never made a point of using it and pulled a lot of plants for more composte! A plant went to seed last year(hiding under squash) and it's all come up all over the bed I was about to weed! Glad I looked it up Again and got a ton more info because I've needed fish oil for my dry eyes a few times(it helped tremendously but costs a fortune!). This was a Great "learned today" for me I wanted to share!

TIL that you can peel the bark of the suckers from root stock and put potting soil around the peeled parts and they will root. Thanks, Elk! Funny that I knew you could get more bushes by doing this, and I have airlayered houseplants, but didn't know I could make more apple trees this way. Doh! manygoatsnmore, Do you really want trees from the root stock from apple trees?? Unless you are propagated them to use as a root stock to graft other apple trees? TIL (once again) that gardening is going to be much harder for me this year ....

TIL (once again) that gardening is going to be much harder for me this year .... Yup, I'm planning to use them as rootstock to practice grafting onto. I have a few apple trees I'd like to have that are not readily available as bareroot trees - they are growing at my brother's house, the old home place, so I have cuttings available to me. I figure I can experiment with free rootstock from girdled apple trees and free cuttings for scions.

This weekend I learned that people will support us, even when we are going backwards instead of forwards. Also, that a minor runny nose can turn into a major problem when had in 4 days of lots of heavy dust.

TIL that after two years where fishing season opener was a bust due to the lakes still being iced over, I really, REALLY missed season openers. The people, the boats, the friendship - not to mention how good it is for the local tourism economy. And sunny 70+ degree weather was icing on the cake!

TIL that 7:30 a.m. destist appointments are not a good idea. Waking up 45 minutes earlier than usual, fighting morning traffic, dealing with the drop off line at school... What was I thinking? DS requested that I schedule his next appointment for the afternoon. I happily honored his request!

TIL that some doctors are very practical and don't lecture you for things that aren't that important. I hope that means you're feeling better? So, in the last couple of years we have had nine family deaths. I've been putting off going to the doctor because in the midst of it all, I've gained 20lbs and I just couldn't handle being lectured. Well, my doctor's assistant finally wore me down and I went in. After hearing everything that's gone on, my doctor told me that all things considered, I'm doing all right. And he said that it's amazing we've made it through all of this without having to be on anti-depressants, which may have caused me to gain weight anyway. It was just so nice to not be told to go to the gym right now. I know I need to get back at it, but we are experiencing some major life shifts and sometimes I just can't handle one more thing - even if it's good for me.

Sometimes being good to yourself just means giving yourself a break. You'll get back to doing what you need to be doing eventually. With that much trauma in your life, only gaining 20# is really pretty remarkable - I eat when I'm stressed! (((Hugs)))

I had a pretty serious eye injury and had to be on bedrest for a week but I'm OK now. I was using the chopsaw without safety goggles. I'd been sawing along for quite some time then suddenly didn't pay attention and sawed through my metal yard stick! It hit my eye with such force that I had some internal bleeding and my pupil was deformed. I'm lucky I didn't lose my eye - my vision is almost back to 100% normal THANK GOD. Lesson learned - wear safety goggles!!!

Glad to hear you're getting back to normal, fffarmergirl. I'm bad about not putting my safety goggles on, too - Your eye injury is a horrible reminder of why I shouldn't be so lax in that area.

I didn't think we were all that close to Lake Superior, but apparently we're close enough that we can get lake effect snow from there.

After reading your story, I will try to be much better about using my safety goggles - I've been kind of lax about it.
