Update...(just ignore the board sticking out too long on the left. My pencil broke and I took the picture to see how that color bookcase would look.) I didn't get as much done as I wanted to this past weekend. I was hoping with the weather and DH being out of town I'd get a lot done. Instead I did some embroidery and caught up on cleaning upstairs. I'm still trying to figure out what look I want in there. I like the idea of painting the furniture white, but then again I don't. Makes perfect sense, huh? I like it, but I'm not sure I love it. I'm still looking on google and pinterest and I will find the look that I love. And hopefully I find it soon...

Love the metal accessories KyMama . I wish we had a Hobby Lobby! I have a huge problem when it comes to decorating ... I like a lot of what I see and I have no talent for decorating so things just don't come out as I planned. Or I just stall out when I can't make a decision and it never gets finished. Melissa , that craft area is so bright and well organized. I'm jealous! I wish we had a room here to use for a craft room. Even our guest bedroom doubles as hubby's office. Then again, maybe the office is doubling as a guest room since all his stuff has taken over the room!

countrymom22, having a Hobby Lobby nearby is dangerous because I never get out of there without a full shopping cart. I completely understand what you mean about stalling out, that's kind of where I am. DH made a suggestion tonight that will take the room in a completely different direction, but I think I like it. It also means I get to buy some new storage units that I've been wanting for at least a year now. I'm keeping the idea to myself right now, don't worry I'll post finished pictures or be back asking for advice if it doesn't work. lol

So close! I had to run to the store last night at 9:00 to get another gallon of primer. Now I'm waiting on the caulk to dry so I can finish painting. I thought I had all the holes and cracks filled until I painted. :0 I'm slowly getting all the junk out of there. It was the pantry/storage room for years so there's a lot! I wonder what our garbage men think when there's 3-4 of those giant black garbage bags each week, sometimes twice a week in addition to our regular cans?

Remember when I said I was going to go a different direction? I got the first coat done yesterday, going to work on the second coat today. Hopefully it won't take all day since I got the hard part done yesterday with the tracing and cutting in. The image is a little distorted because I couldn't keep my cell phone straight while taking the panoramic shot. The colors are not as dark as my phone makes them look, the tones are right just a little brighter. And once I get a better overhead light in there it should be even brighter. I know this type of thing won't be for everyone, but I'm loving it so far. It makes me smile when I walk into the room. And that's the point, right? I need to get one of those sound machines and then I can really pretend I'm relaxing the mountains. The countertop is going to be installed on the right wall and it will wrap around to the wall you can't see in the picture. It will take up the whole right wall. Right now it has a blue Formica top with a light wood trim on the front. Obviously that won't work in this room. So I was thinking of painting it the dark green. It would blend in to the painted wall, but the other wall is pine. My DH said we could put pine on the top. Or maybe I should do a combination of them both with a painted top and leave the wood trim on the front. Obviously I'm not sure, what do y'all think? DH is ordering my floor this morning, hopefully he can get it on this Sunday's truck. If you want to see it, you can find it here on the Lumber Liquidators website.

Thanks here to stay , that's a great compliment! shellymay,, As much as I love the look of the simple farmhouse style, this is more me. I'm more country cabin and nature and animals. My main concern with using the pine on the countertop, and yes he means the planks, are the cracks between each board. We would flip them over to their smooth sides but still no matter how tight you get them there would still be a crack. Would a sealer fill those in so that I could write smoothly? I've been calling it a craft room, but really it will be used for whatever I want including my genealogy research so I will probably be writing on it a lot. Rustoleum makes a countertop coating, not the transformations just a paint. It's a one step process, just paint it on and wait three days for it to cure. I'd forgotten about it until just now. Maybe if I meet in the middle and paint it a color close to the pine? Other than my light fixture I think the countertop is my last big decision. I can't wait until I get this big stuff done so that I can move on to the decorating and storage stage. I bought two of these cabinets. I know I said I didn't want to spend too much money but DH told me to get them if I wanted so I did. lol I've been wanting them since I first saw them a couple of years ago at Wal-Mart. They will be the only furniture other than the treadle machine and countertop. I don't want the room to be too full, but I definitely needed something for storage. I got these instead of open bookcases so I could hide things behind closed doors if needed. You know, shellymay, as I look at the picture of the bookcase I think you may be right about the pine. I just need to figure out how to make it smooth or get a protective desk pad, that would probably be easier and might even be cheaper too.

Love the cabinets...................
YOUR hubby can use the planks for the counter tops, he just needs to square the edges of the lengths up...that would make them flush and no gaps

He'll appreciate you thinking he'd be the one using the table saw. If I want to get anything done in the near future I have to do it. It's not his fault, he's working 12-14 hour days right now. Yesterday he went in at 7:30am and didn't make it home until 11:30pm.

I'm at a standstill in the construction part of the room. Got my walls done and was hoping to get the countertop installed yesterday, but DH had a work call and then we had to go by his store for a couple hours. By the time we got all that done and a little shopping it was too late to get started. Ugh! So I decided this morning to work on a couple of small projects. I bought this chair for our school room/office, but the desk now has a nice wooden chair so this one was just floating around doing nothing. It's a $20 chair from Wal-Mart that was a boring gray. I bought this fabric several years ago to make a valance for my bathroom and never got around to it. Now I just need to find a coordinating fabric to make a curtain for the closet. (That's my "helper", Luna, peeking around the back.)

Thanks Woodpecker, and you're right I'm having fun now. I was stressing over painting the furniture and figuring out the wall color, but not now. I had a friend of mine make a comment about the decor not being very crafty. She said that I should have pictures with crafting phrases and crafty pictures. Do y'all do that? Make sure the decor matches the function of the room? For example, do I really need to decorate my kitchen with a kitchen theme? Isn't it obvious that it's a kitchen? I mean I have owls in the bathroom, they don't exactly scream bathroom. lol

I love your walls ! I can't wait to see the finished room - it's going to be fabulous ! No, I don't decorate rooms according to function. I decorate with what I like, where I like it. You're obviously a creative person, and to be creative you often have to " think outside of the box ". I think you should decorate your room with what you like and whatever will make you feel happy, relaxed and inspired when you're there. I think it's fine to decorate according to function , if that's what makes you happy. It just doesn't work for me, because I like too many different " styles " and can't seem to stick with one, lol !

I'm planning on putting an "idea board" on the pine wall above the counter top. Originally I was going to clean up this frame and maybe paint it and add cork. I've also seen where people cover the cork with fabric and that's pretty too. But I recently saw the idea with the chicken wire and I don't know which I like best or which would be more practical. Obviously tacking something to cork is pretty easy, but it leaves holes. The chicken wire one might be a little finicky getting the clothespins to hold things, but no holes. Here's the frame I'll be working with, I'm posting the pic so that you can see that the frame is pretty basic. It's a decent size, about 24" x 48". And the inspirations... Which one do y'all like? I don't have to use the picture frame I already have, but if I have to make one it would need to be pretty easy like the one on the right.

For my inspiration board I screwed a piece of leftover metal from our roof to the wall. I use clothespin with a magnet attached to hang everything.

I've seen the boards made with sheet metal on Pinterest too. I just don't have any metal hiding anywhere, or if I do it's hidden very well. I like the idea of using magnets because I know I would make some pretty cute magnets.
I also have a basic cork board that I can hang in there too. I don't have to make one if y'all thing simple would be better. It's 24" x 36" and might be a better fit for that wall. The wall is 6½ foot long and we ended up attaching the counter top about halfway up the wall so that I can work at it standing up without straining my back, so it's not like I have a blank wall to work with.

I tend- hating housecleaning as I do- to look at whether a thing is easy to keep clean. And, while I think the chicken wire is interesting and different, it looks like a dust catcher to me.
Isn't there magnetic paint if you think a magnet board is appealing?

here to stay, I didn't think about it grabbing all the dirt, especially in the basement. When we get the ceiling up it probably won't be as bad, but I can picture it now covered in more dust and cobwebs than ideas. I'm gonna go with cork I think, just because I have it already. And I have plenty of thumb tacks too. Sometimes the cheapest version is the best.

I have to admit, I have a cork board but I love that chicken wire one! Even though I chose to use the cork downstairs, I think I'm still going to make a smaller version for upstairs to use for notes and reminders. My floor didn't come in until Wednesday and I had to give it a couple of days to acclimate so my Saturday morning has been spent putting floor down. Fun times y'all, fun times....

The place is pulling together really nicely. You don't realize how much work it is until you're half way done and think, isn't this done yet?
I would not make a craft room "crafty" either. It speaks for itself. For color, think of inspiration. Red is hot and good to get the passions going, so adding a red wall or red accent would be better for a working room than "this is my craft room" plaque. Cabinet makers glue wood together to make a larger flat surface. So, it's possible. Otherwise, use plywood with a veneer of your chosen wood. This is what I did in my sewing room and put Waterlox on it, but your choice of finish. Just sand real well between coats.

Hey y'all, I haven't forgotten to update this thread. We went on a short vacation and came back to a dead air conditioner, well technically the blower in the furnace but same conclusion - a really hot house. So now I'm having to move stuff into my craft room so that they contractors have enough room to maneuver a new furnace in. Thankfully they will be getting that done on Friday and then hopefully I can get back in there. The Sunday before last my DH brought home some wider pine boards for the ceiling so I guess I still have some construction to do even though I already started organizing and decorating. I was going to keep this as a surprise for the final reveal but since that is going to be a few I decided to go ahead and share. I couldn't just put a blank cork board up! As you can see it needs another coat of paint, but unless the light (or camera flash) hits it just right you can't see the paint lines. So I may not paint it unless it drives me crazy, I mean once I get down there most of it will be covered with notes and ideas anyway. The countertop is painted with chalkboard paint. I need to prime it with chalk and then I can write notes right on it.

Painting the corkboard was not an original idea, I kept seeing them on Pinterest with chevrons or other geometric designs. I'm not into chevrons or other shapes and I had to have a bear in there somewhere. Not that another bear won't sneak in there later. lol shellymay, I may have been closer to you during this vacation. We went down to Mammoth Cave for a few days and then detoured through the Smoky Mountains for a couple more. So surely one way or the other I got closer. lol
