I've kept veg gardens for about 8 years and have some room to dig an extra one, or more, this fall if I can keep up with them next year. I'm looking into growing einkorn, anybody have small scale grain growing advice? As in, no tractor, just a 1/4 acre or less plot and hand tools, organic only. Seems on the small scale buying normal grains usually makes more sense than growing, but this kind is very rare. It sells for $2.60/lb, too much for me but I want to replace our wheat with it. I like the idea of einkorn as it can by used pretty much like modern whole wheat but has a gentler gluten and better protein and vitamin makeup, and if I had surplus grain it's a niche market. Plus with a growing interest out there I can save some seed to sell or share, help bring it back from near extinction and distribute it to other gardeners. To use it these old wheat varieties need de-hulling, anybody know how would I go about that? Seems most people rig up a diy machine, something to do with gluing a rubber disc in a grain mill, but those descriptions are confusing me as I'm no engineer.

so you have read this on how to build one ? www.savingourseeds.org/pdf/grain_dehuller.pdfit has a picture. I will go take pictures of mine if it will help you the other way to do it is to just grind the grain whole and then sift out the husk you will need the correct grain mill and set it correct, might be a bit tricky, but I have got it to work before.
