Just received a text from my sister in Houston. They are expecting a snow blizzard. First time ever. I wonder if they have snow plows or can borrow them. I told her to wear socks.

We have plenty of bobcats, graders and tractors.
I and several others were stuck in a blizzard once. Mostly four to five foot drifts. Local farmers opened the road and got us going. Much quicker than any government employees could have.

Does not look like the county is going to plow our road, so am headed out to get it done. Sadly some of it is already packed quite hard. Get it cleaned up before the next storm tonight.

I'm seeing a lot of questions in Facebook groups regarding chickens and goats from folks in that area. Worried that their livestock will suffer. Having raised chickens here in Wisconsin for nearly 15 years, I constantly share that the chickens will do just fine. They won't like it, but they will be ok. Just keep the water open and food to keep them full. And please, please don't use a space heater!
Honestly, I think the chickens will fare better than the humans down south.
My chickens seem to do the best out of all my critters. They seem to take the bitter cold in stride.
I'm grateful that our temperatures here will be creeping up into the teens and even 20's later this week!

My DD #1 is in the power business.
She just asked me to pray for all of Texas as they have insufficient power (due to $$ and graft and stupidness I may not disclose) to keep the grid up for everyone in TX [= some without heat/ability to cook or gas stations to run. Wait for it NOT to hit the news./]Here it is: public info spiritdaily.org/blog/news/texas-to-get-heavy-snow-as-cold-continues

Level 3 snow emergency was called. The plows are having a hard time keeping up. I’ve only seen snowmobiles down our road.

We are just waiting for the power to go off again. So far five times in the last 24 hours. At least two hours each time.
3° right now.

Power just came back on. It is now a crispy 16° which is the expected low Thursday. At least no more single digit temperatures expected till next winter at least. More ice and sleet late tonight.
Thursday a week 72° is predicted.
Last 12 months has been quite the journey.

80° here today. Time to start turning on air conditioners around noon and off at bed time.
It was a lovely evening, still, comfortable temperature, beautiful moonrise, and then mosquitos showed up. It was 3° eight days ago. Six days ago it still hadn't gone above freezing.
We painted the house last fall so we really need to exclude the swallows this year. But they have fewer and fewer places to go and their numbers are declining. They keep mosquitos down but ounce for ounce I don't believe any other creature poops as much as a swallow.

Spring! Yeah Right. This morning on Interstate 90, Snoqualmie Pass, chains are required on everything except four wheel drive vehicles. US 12 and US 2 they are advised. Have to say this happens quite often this time of the year Mother Nature has to have another party.

The low temperature Wednesday night is supposed to be 24 degrees. There goes all the fruit for this year. The only thing I can save is strawberries. Same thing happened last year. I put a lot of time and effort into caring for my orchard trees, only to have no fruit again.

Vickilynn, same thing here. We'll be spending the day bringing in seedlings from the hoop house and covering the strawberries and aronia berries. It looks like those seedlings will be indoors until Thursday. The fruit trees are all in full glorious bloom. The WX guys are talking a low of 26o and accumulating snow tomorrow. At least I didn't follow an impulse I had the other day to disconnect all the stock tank heaters.
It looks like a lot of the region will be in this weather pattern so no commercial fruit unless from other parts of the country. I haven't bought apples in years and am grateful we have enough canned and dried to meet those needs for a season or two.

We set tomatoes, peppers and eggplant in the garden about 2 weeks ago. We will be covering them Tuesday night as forecasted low for Wednesday am is 32 degrees. Watching Thursday am as right now they predict 39 deg, a little close. Strawberries are blooming as are blue and blackberries. Pear tree full of baby pears and apple trees blooming. God will provide but I do hate to see the loss.

It's been snowing off and on today. Nothing accumulating. April snow is pretty common up here; what's unusual is that we haven't had an April snowstorm this year. Now watch, I just jinxed myself. April this year has gone from normal 50 degrees to warm 80's to...low 30's with snow today. And a few days ago, too. April is always kind of a "hold my beer" type of month here.
I'm sorry to hear about the impact on the fruit trees; that's really sad. While we don't have a lot of fruit trees, one crazy weather year we were in the 80's in mid March, stayed warm for a few weeks, everything bloomed - and you guessed it, the freezing weather returned and we had zero production from the apple trees.

We are like you with very strange weather. I covered all of the beds that have things peeking out and I think they’ll be fine. I put a nice layer of straw top of my garlic greens and they should be OK. But I am worried about the orchard. There were a few blossoms but mostly just bursting buds from the 80° weather. This would be the 4th year in a row weather took out everything if it indeed happens. We are scheduled to be in the 20s for the next 3 nights. Saying prayers and crossing my fingers. We’ve never really had any production at all except for from the blueberry bushes which are usually abundant. We either had flooding, gale force winds which blew all the blossoms off, or cold at the wrong time. And 1 year we had a monsoon. We’ve only been here with the orchard in place for 6 years.

Dh just told me the temperature is supposed to get down into the teens tonight. Awesome. Little sarcasm there.
I have no idea what kind of apple trees we have - they seemed to only bear fruit biennially but then they went and produced a very limited amount of fruit last year. Which normally would have been an off year. Of course, it was 2020 so why did I expect normal? Let's add in the fact that I know absolutely nothing about fruit trees, so there's that. With the exception of the year I mentioned above, these trees don't seem to be affected by late season snow or freezes. The trade off is that the apples are pretty...disgusting...when it comes to taste. No one wants to eat them fresh. They're okay in applesauce. The trees are small and don't produce a whole lot of fruit, so that's fine. The deer seem to enjoy the apples though. The first year we were here, apples started disappearing. Overnight, large amounts would be gone. Then early one morning, we saw several deer get up on their hind legs, shake the branches - and it rained apples. Which were gobbled up in short order by the rest of their families and friends. Mystery solved.
It'll be interesting to see if and how the weather affects the apples this year.

If you would prefer to have good apples for eating rather than feeding the deer, have you considered grafting better tasting varieties onto the established tree? It's not a complicated process, lots of videos on line, and plenty of sources for the scion wood.

Well we’re being fooled by Mother Nature here too...it’s supposed to be 75 today & just heard 35 tonight. I’ll be so upset if these temps ruin my Pear tree, it’s blooming and just noticed flowers on one of our apple trees, too.
The pollens heavy here, runny nose, scratchy eyes, ick.

It is snowing now, getting 3 to 5 inches tonight. The worst thing though is tomorrow night’s low temperature. I feel bad for the local orchard owners. This has happened several years in a row now.

We had frost last night, and a small stream flood warning, and now a flood warning for the Sandusky River today. Yesterday, we drove the 45 minutes to the church where my son is pastor. It was dumping rain mixed with snow, then it rained hard all the rest of the day. I think there are chances of frost the next two nights also. I re-covered strawberries for the third time this spring Saturday evening. They are loaded with blossoms, and I don’t want to lose them.

Parts of south central MO down into Arkansas were under a frost advisory last night, all about 75 miles south of us. Even so, we were officially at 40o this morning, 35o at our house. No sign of frost, thank goodness. I have seen frost as late as the Thursday after Memorial Day in west central MO--like right at my garden where I lost a bunch of plants.
