I was hoping that as Luna got older we would be able to take the crate down and I could have a huge chunk of my floor space back in the living room. But she likes her crate and spends a lot of time in there during the day napping. She also runs in there when we're leaving the house without us having to tell her so I guess it's her safe place. Anyway, I hate looking at it so I decided to at least make it prettier and more useful. I built a basic frame out of 1x3's slightly larger than the crate and added a top using the tongue and groove boards I'm putting on the basement walls. The top is nice because it gives me somewhere to store her stuff with plenty of room left over. Since I had all the wood already it hasn't cost me anything yet. I still need to fill the nail and screw holes and sand it and then I need to decide what color to paint it. I think I might add some thin curtains along the back and sides 'cause a girl needs her privacy. Luna supervising construction.... I promise it's straighter than it looks! lol

Looks great and makes a nice table, paint? why not just a stain?

That looks pretty. I'd use a good finish, not paint. Especially if you are going to use the top as a table.

I'm leaning more towards stain this morning. Originally I was going to paint it white because I already have the paint. But I think I would prefer it match the wood that we already have in the living room. I've got to make a run to the store and get the stain and hopefully it's finished this weekend.

This looks great. You should not paint this. If you feel there's no necessary to paint it, do not do it. Natural wooden color looks absolutely stunning. Thanks

KyMama, Happy to hear you decided on staining, the whole darn concept of making a dogcrate into a nice looking addition in the house is just amazing, you come up with some of the nicest transition ideas.....and now I want to know if the basement ever got finished with the remodel, you where doing such great things down there ;)Wow guess what just popped into my head, maybe if you took up a little sewing you could make littledresses for the snakes and maybe they wouldn't be so scary anymore

shellymay, I started staining it and it looks nice. Unfortunately my last wisdom tooth decided it had had enough and demanded I get it removed so finishing the crate cover has been put on hold. Of course, you know KY weather so as soon as I start feeling better I'm sure it will start raining. lol You should see me trying to get this thing in and out the doors. Luckily we have french doors that go out onto the deck or I'd have been in trouble because it wouldn't fit out the front door. No the basement isn't done. I updated the basement thread with what little I've gotten done or I guess I should say changed. homesteadingfamilies.proboards.com/thread/8828/basement-makeover?page=3 I will NOT be making dresses for the snakes.

I for one will not complain about the recent rains, we have had such a dry spring this year Hope your mouth heals quick with the tooth removal and you can get back to what you do best! Okay so no dresses for the snakes, maybe next time you are on mower and see one you can carry a can of HOT PINK spray paint and speed up that mower get along side them and spray them PINK, surely pink snakes aren't as frightening, hehe!

Or even if they're still frightening, at least they'll be easier to see!
Great job with the dog crate. Can't wait to see it finished. Feel better.

Did you paint it? Share your finished dog crate. And I have one suggestion for you, make a double layer crate. Craftsman Router Table is good to help you.

I haven't been able to get it finished yet because I have to sit it outside to work on it and it won't stop raining. I've started staining it and because the smell is so strong it needs to be able to stay outside at least over night. Every time I think about dragging outside it gets cloudy. I think I'm going to have to get my DH to help me carry it down to the garage so that I can get it finished.
Double layer crate?

Finally got enough good weather to finish staining. It probably needs another coat, but I'm tired of dragging it in and out of the house. lol Originally I planned on putting curtains on the back and sides, but I've changed my mind. I like the look of the curtains, but she sheds a lot. Can you imagine how often I would have to take the curtains down and wash them?

That turned out great, and I agree with the NO curtains, besides Luna might not like them as she wants to see all around what a great multi functional piece of furniture you now have....

shellymay, Thanks. That was the point of the curtains though. Less woofing at nothing. lol I think the curtains would make it look larger too. Right now you can mostly see through it, but with curtains it would look more solid. Hopefully that makes sense. @pony, Thank you. I mostly take ideas I see online and do it myself. They sell really expensive crate covers and I'm just too cheap for that. lol

Wow, what an expensive crate. You must be rich, or you love your dog way too much.
Is the stain also the finish? I think it is dark enough. You could put on a clear coat. I like Waterloos, used it on the floors, but I know there are cheaper alternatives.

Maura, the dog might be a little spoiled, but I'm definitely not rich. I just hated looking at that ugly crate sitting in my living room all the time. I made the crate with materials I already had around the house so it didn't cost me anything out of pocket except for the stain. The frame is just 1x3 pine boards and the top is the tongue and groove pine flooring so not exactly a high quality wood. And the stain is one of those that has polyurethane in it so I don't need to add an additional clear coat.

I know, I was just teasing. It looks beautiful and I think would cost a pretty penny if you were to pay for it, especially in that size.
I also have a large crate sitting in my living room, but it's not in the way. I put it up for a foster dog who has been gone for a year. It's just so heavy I don't have the oomf to take it down and carry it somewhere. When I move, I'll have the movers deal with it.
