I read the political form, just to try to understand the different issues/thoughts to form my own .

Thoughtful discourse can be useful, it is often hard to find though!

I didn't get the "we want you back" message (probably because I never logged out, and visited occasionally trying to track down the source of spam and software that was interfering with the adaptive software I use to be better-able to use the computer). Once I established the source, I tried to delete my account. After being told that option didn't exist, I explained (based on more than a decade of experience with vB as an owner/admin/mod), and expressed surprise that the forum owners made it so difficult to do. In response, I got a lecture and was told my "account is closed" with the forum.
When I visited the link in the email, I got a screen that stated, "You have been banned for the following reason: VERY RUDE User Requested Ban- Never Reactivate (SM) Date the ban will be lifted: Never"
Four hours or so later, I received the June Newsletter from the forum, so obviously my information was not removed. I've contacted the parent company and requested this be done, but suspect it will not happen.
By the standards of forum decorum, my request was not particularly rude. The problem was my initial request, and response, were based on the expectation that I was dealing with someone who's background/experience with online forums is similar to my own. I failed to take into account that I was dealing with a paid employee of an advertising company, someone with very different expectations of what involvement in the community means, and possibly less experience of the norms of such communications.
Buyouts of forums are always difficult, the buyers never have the same expectations as those of the members. Forums always change, often not for the better in the eyes of those who built the group. Forums often don't survive. It would be interesting to see where this will end up.
Well, it would be if I hadn't been banned. . . banned without ever making a post. A new personal record! ;-)

I came here today to see if others got the "miss you" email and/or the newsletter (first I had ever gotten & I was a paying member for two years or so). I haven't missed them a minute!
I too vote no politics (& realize it's not a vote), especially when I read that a poster was banned for "calling out a troll" etc - too much misery and drama! The negativity and rancor seemed to bleed onto the other sections too. I know because I never applied to be in the Politics section but saw enough references to who hated who, etc.
Let's focus on homesteading & leading sensible lives! If you have a political stance then get out & live it, IMHO. Organize, donate, volunteer, vote, lobby but why lock horns with others just sitting on computers? I don't mean to be harsh but I am afraid to have Homesteading Families go downhill because it helps me feel less alone and ignorant on my land, even though I'm both! Thanks.

I hope you stick to your guns about not having a political forum on here, Melissa. It's like drinking poison!

Exactly, now if there is some big legislative issue affecting cattle (for instance) and someone wants to talk about it in the cattle forum that is fine. If it is really relevant, then it is allowable. But I don't think we need endless debates about elections/politicians/headlines etc... This just in: Obama is trying to make all cattle owners sell their herds to the Iranians. John Kerry is behind all of this, and is using money that Hillary Clinton got as a payout from Benghazi for letting all that happen. John Boehner is trying to stop all of this from happening, using the 2nd Amendment. If you read the fine print in the US Constitution, it forbids cattle and other four footed animals from being sold to foreign nations, and is also cited under the Williamson Act of 1916. John Boehner and President Bush are real patriots, and are encouraging people to start raising as many calves and chickens, just to stop the Iranians and the Mongolians from getting them all. You see, they are trying to free up all the oil that Iran and Taiwan have. They've been hiding the oil since they signed the Chip Treaty back in 1973. (It is so secret that you can't find it on the internet.) It is a trade for our cattle and their oil, plus all of the non-GMO popcorn that is grown in Argentina. And you know what? Obama has LIED about all of it, and so has John Boehner. If you have any money in non-GMO popcorn futures, you better get out now!!! The popcorn market is going to go bust!!!!

I got one of those emails and was rather irritated by it. It makes me think of the kind of guy you might date that would be insulting and rude, and then be all surprised when you'd tell him NO to another date, you'd rather be home washing your hair.
I didn't bother to delete, let alone bother to respond.

Franklin, that post is just. . . awesome. I still have one question though;
Should I wear the tinfoil shiny-side in, or shiny-side out?

I never went into politics on the other board and wouldn't if there was one here. I think talking and arguing ( which is the way it usually ends up) about politics is a total waste of time. Everyone makes up their owns minds and on one is going to change that no matter what.

Apparently their 'banning' doesn't quite mean the same thing that it once did. I also received that same HT June Newsletter in my email today.... not exactly an 'invite' back, but still..... Yeah Jim....No contest; you win hands down.... you're the ONLY one I know who has ever been banned, while never having made a post!!!

My brother was banned from Tomatoville without making a post. Only reason that we can think of is that he was my brother.
As for HT, I also got the June newsletter despite having been banned for well over a year. I wonder how far back they go in such a project? Even though we may all be gone, we're still counted as members for advertising purposes.

In a warped kind of way, I'm kinda glad to hear I wasn't the only one to receive the "Newsletter". When it arrived, I began to suspect it was some form of petty harassment from the mod who placed the ban (and I still wonder. . . ). On the other hand, it suggests that they view a "ban" as nothing more than a way to make it more difficult for people to stop their mailings. As Paquebot wrote, we are still numbers for advertising purposes.
If I don't hear back from their parent company on Monday, I suppose I'll have to do something about it. Personally, I think I'd rather pull weeds in the mud and rain, while being devoured by mosquitos.

Ha! Perhaps. Makes a person want to carry bug spray, doesn't it?
How ironic; I got the newsletter this morning. That one got more of my attention; I actually pushed the Unsubscribe button. That was fine for me, more like taking out the garbage or getting rid of a stink under the house. Not fun and certainly a timesuck, but necessary for a better life.
BTW, I also vote No Politics, even though it's not really a voting matter. There are political forums out there where folks can go and yell their heads off. I figure that those who really want to talk politics can go there, and keep this board as free as possible of all the rancor that usually accompanies such discussions.

My bad! I had thought "What's Going On" was this forum's alternative to General Chat, and was treating it as such. I will cease and desist!
Just wanted to add that anyone who wants to intelligently debate politics and current events is welcome to do so on our forum (mine and Numb's). Please note the word intelligently. We don't want to see a bunch of cut-and-paste posts of the latest propaganda generated by Fox or MSNBC. We are not amused by simple-minded slurs like "Obummer." If your mission is simply to tell us how awful the Republicans or Democrats are, we probably won't be impressed. If you feel the need to hide behind a moderator's skirts, and want to resort to having your opponent banned if you lose an argument, you won't get much help from us. But if you'd like to have an intelligent conversation, slip on your asbestos undies and come on over!

i thought yall might find this on interest.....before i type it out i wanna say dont stone the messenger...i am just relating a story.....on the news last week there was a news story....i think it was from new york where this famous artist...cant remember the name but had an art showing of pictures he found interesting on the internet.these were photos others took but he got them ,added his name across bottom and had a show...saying these are pictures from internet i find interesting/liked....one picture sold for $90,000.the person that took it didnt get a dime of it.they said under the fair use act anything posted on net could be used/copied etc. and even sold.they had some legal people at end talking about some sort of ruling by the feds in a case...to my understanding...that has made this allowable.so at the end of story they said you put it on the net others can use it,copy it and even sell.
once again i am only relating a recent news story so dont hammer me with stones...lol

Franklin, that post is just. . . awesome. I still have one question though; Should I wear the tinfoil shiny-side in, or shiny-side out? Shiny side in, most definitely, but you have to use Reynold's Wrap brand only. The other brands won't work. LOL!

I got the news letter but not the invitation. I have been on a few times to check PMs but no longer post as I certainly don't have anything nice to say. All the nice things I have to say are for this forum and another.

I put that board under the surviving section, but didn't make it real clear that I meant it as a place to discuss events & how they affect our prepping & day to day survival. It has been ok the way it has been going. That was my fault.

I have been getting the news letters and I got that email. I won't bother to unsubscribe because I just told my yahoo account those messages are SPAM. Any mail from there just goes into my SPAM folder. i smile when I see them as I one or two times daily delete everything in my SPAM folder and see the emails there where they belong.

I haven't gotten one either but it's probably because I check it every day. Of course, I only check the one board there, Real Estate. I never used that site for anything else. Just noticed I got the newsletter (6/12) in my spam folder. As I said, I only check the real estate board (almost daily!), so the newsletter holds no interest for me.

Did not realize, until reading all these posts, how many of you people had been banned from HT. Did not know I was hanging around with such a bad bunch. As for as the political forums, I have no use for them. When I go on them I quickly realize that I'm the only one on there that is right and have never been able to change the minds of the others, so I gave up trying.

I, too, got the newsletter in my email in box.
Sometimes, it's nice to hear from someone who is back in your past so that you can find out how they're doing and if anything has changed in their life.
So, when I opened the email and found only links to threads generated by folks who do not own the forum that were sort of gussied up to look as though they were some sort of special content, I became aware that the new ownership is still doing what they were doing that got their panties in hot water.
It's reassuring to discover that there are some constants in this world.

I'd be another one who would vote against a politics board. We are a homesteading group. What on earth does that have to do with politics??? Politics has a lot to do with homesteading.. Some States you can't legally collect rain water.. The State claims they own it. Thus politics...

I agree that some political happenings can be related to homesteading and might rightfully be discussed, but at this point, I'm just looking to learn and chat with like minded people without all the drama. If we can't play nice, why play at all, you know? Just my 2 cents! Take it for what it's worth!

Some States you can't legally collect rain water.. The State claims they own it. Thus politics... I totally agree...there are a lot of political issues that involve homesteading. But when was the last time any of us saw a real political discussion about things that really affect our lives, without all the drama that goes along with it? 99.9999% of the topics are nothing more than the agendas of what the cable TV stations push.

If some get offended at the drop of a hat, then they shouldn't be discussing major issues. There is a big divide in what some consider homesteading.. Some want and get help to support themselves from the labor of others. Sure they may grow their own garden and such and they consider that homesteading Some put every moment in supporting their family by growing their own food and selling the extra, by raising their own animals for milk and meat etc. They work the soil and do things as best as they can with what they have. They consider that homesteading.. Those are just 2 of the differences that have to do with politics.. I'll shut up now and won't say another word here..
