I've picked out my fabric for the New Year's Day mystery. It's a dark blue, a medium blue and a cream with small blue hearts. I may end up changing my mind because it's a very "quiet" color combo. I think I'm going to do the Crossroads BOM from Fat Quarter Shop this year and I'm teetering over Pat Sloan's quiltalong. I've been keeping an eye out for more 2016 BOMs and this is what I've found so far.
Fat Cat Patterns has two new BOMs starting on January 1st. One is a Christmas Row quilt and the other is called June Bride. www.fatcatpatterns.com/bom.html Jenny of Elefantz is also planning two BOMs for 2016. www.elefantz.com/2015/10/two-free-boms-for-2016.html

Have you ever just done your own?

My own quilt designs? All the time. I've done several mysteries like Merry Mayhem's but I've never actually done someone else's BOM program like the Fat Quarter Shop's. I used to host my own BOM's and block swaps on a small quilt forum that is now closed.

Thanks for all those links calicokatie1 - I'm going to check them out after Christmas lunch while DH is sleeping off the meal. I always like seeing new links I haven't come across before. Your fabric choices sound really nice - blues always make for a stunning quilt, IMHO.

I mean a mystery for the group, rather than following someone else's. I've done them in the past, too. I don't like BOM programs (didn't even offer them when I had the brick & mortar shop) because the expense doesn't justify it. I've never been a big swap person after being on the losing end of that one in some old Yahoo groups. It is just more 'personal' if the group does their own.

No, I stayed with the BOMs and swaps. Last year when the other place asked for members to put together some monthly projects, I did start planning a one day mystery. Maybe it was year before last? Anyway, I worked out the fabric amounts but didn't get around to making it up, timing myself and taking pictures. I've actually been thinking about that one again because it's a good stash buster and I'm wanting to really attack my stash this year and finish a lot of my UFOs.

Really sorry you got burned on your swaps farmchix. That's a real shame and I can understand the disappointment when others don't keep up their end of the bargain. I was kind of hoping that at some point the quilters on HSF might do a block swap. :-) calicokatie1, are you a member of the Yahoo group Stashbusters? They are really into using up stash and finishing UFOs. I joined their UFO Challenge this year and although I didn't manage to get through all mine, I did get a number of quilts and tops finished. If you're not a member, check them out - they're a very active (VERY active) group and there's always lots of chatter going on about ploughing through the stash.

No, I'm not a member of Stashbusters. I'll jump in there and take a look, though. Thanks, Kiwifarmgal!

I'm a member of stashbusters, but I just lurk. I'm on another group that says Yahoo groups is going away. They started setting up a new group to get ready.

Wow, that's news indeed, farmchix - I wonder what the timeframe will be and how much notice people will get... I hope there's an alternative to FB. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for the list. I have quilted for years but never tried a BOM. I think I will look through these and pick one.

Thanks for the great thread! I've been wanting to do some mysteries and plan to do the Merry Mayhem one. Can't wait to check out the others you posted here. Makes me get excited. I have a bunch of UFO's to finish and need to use up stash.

I did download the Quiltville one. Now that I have seen it, I like it. Was it last year's that a lot didn't like after it was revealed? IDK My plan for this year is to actually get more quilts made. I've been sluffing off while the house was for sale......

I finished my New Year's Day quilt top. I ended up changing my fabric and I'm satisfied with how it turned out. Barbara Brackman posted more information on her Westering Women series. Of all the BOMs I've looked at, this might be the only one I'll actually make. A few years back I bought some remnants of 19th century reproductions and they've been waiting for me to find a project for them.

I love the stories about the pioneer women who quilted their way across the country on the Oregon Trail. I bought a book years ago that had great stories and pictures of the quilts and the inside of the covered wagons. One young couple was working their way west with a wagon train and had nothing. The girl was about 17 and walked all the way. She had a kettle she'd picked up along the way that someone had tossed. It was dented but still usable and she carried it on her arm like a purse. She kept scraps in it and, as she walked, she stitched the scraps together to make a quilt. Her husband was maybe a year or two older and he helped the men with whatever was needed. I always wished there had been more information about them and how their lives turned out.

OK, I caved. I'm doing the 365 day block challenge. They start super easy and get progressively harder. I'm doing it to get myself in the habit of spending a little time each day sewing. I never take time for myself, so maybe this will help.

Loved the pictures on the Westering Women link you posted, calicokatie1. There's a trend towards small houses these days, and the wagons reminded me of how much can be packed into a small space. You're a brave woman, farmchix to take on that 365 challenge. Do keep us posted on how you go with it. I take my hat off to anyone that can complete that one.

Go, Farmchix! Hope you'll post pictures as you get your blocks made. Esther Alieu is making a pieced BOM this year and I really like the smaller version and the center medallion in it. I'm going to save the pattern when it's released on the 15th and consider making it a few months down the road. She's moving her Yahoo Group to Facebook so I guess I'll break down and join so I can access all the neat stuff she does. My problem with Facebook is that once you join, it seems like you no longer have a choice. It invades everything you do. You need a whip and a chair to keep it at a distance.
Joanie, have you chosen one of these projects to work on? Do you prefer piecing or applique? And Potsiemama, did you do the Merry Mayhem mystery? My big focus this year is going to be finishing UFOs and beating back my stash. I'm not buying any new fabric unless I need some white and I expect by summer I'll need to stock up on that again.
Kiwifarmgal, I used to do a lot of swaps - I mean, a lot. That's why I have stacks of blocks put back that need to be set into tops and I'm hoping to use a lot of those up this year. I really like the quiltalongs now because I don't have to worry about deadlines and postage. I remember one group that did a neat one. Each month, one person would choose an online pattern (mostly from Quilter's Cache) and they would all make it and post pictures. They formed a new sign up group each year and chose people to pick the patterns. Those ladies made some beautiful quilts and there was a good variety of techniques since you had different quilters choosing the patterns. The beauty of it was that if someone chose a very advanced pattern, like a really complicated star, you could replace it with a simpler star pattern. You were also able to make your blocks from your choice of fabrics so that they all went together. Maybe we could get something like that going here.

Right now, they are simple enough that you could get caught up. I am such an enabler.... I thought I would work on my website today....4 hours later, I lost complete track of time! I'm still working on it, but I need to stop if I am going to get any of those blocks done...

Don't know why I haven't noticed your website link before, farmchix, but thanks for mentioning it in a thread. I went and took a look. What a lovely site - great job! You write well and I enjoyed reading a number of your pages. Will be checking it out regularly. I like that blue/green backing fabric...

Craftsy did a sweet BOM in 2015 using 8" blocks that make a calendar quilt. The blocks are very simple and would be good for a beginner. I've saved the blocks because I think it would be a good baby quilt. They've just posted the setting directions with a bonus block and a complete list of links to all the patterns. When you click on February, for some reason it gives a message that the page doesn't exist. When you click on March, though, there's a link on that page to the February heart. You might have to sign up for Craftsy to access the patterns but it's free. I think they're going to show a picture of their completed quilt next month.

I also found a beautiful redwork quilt bom from a year or two ago so all the patterns are already posted. I thought it would make a really special quilt for a baby girl.
needleknowledge.com/free-patterns/quilting-and-sewing/redwork-bom-quilt/
In addition to her 2016 BOM, Pat Sloan and some other designers are doing what they call The Splendid Samper. 100 blocks this year beginning Valentine's Day!
www.thesplendidsampler.com/2016/01/09/test/
I'm excited that Barbara Brachman's "Westering Women" BOM will start Wednesday. I've been looking forward to that one.
Anybody start any of these new projects or working on some old ones? I'm quilting a top I made several years ago as a Christmas present for my son. I'm giving my fingers a rest for a few days and then I'll finish it pretty quickly. My plan is to keep one on the hoop all year until I have all my tops quilted.

Buttermilk Basin has started their 2016 BOM. I'm saving the patterns but doubt that I'll ever make the appliqued blocks. I am looking at them as embroidery patterns though. Since it's snowmen, I think it would be pretty as bluework with alternating snowflake blocks or something like that. Nice for a little boy. Click on Mystery BOM on the website's toolbar. The January pattern is about halfway down the page just before the list of products for sale.

I also ran across a pretty little bom being done by Mary's River Quilt Guild. They've posted the patterns for the whole year in advance. I love the beehive block!
marysriverquiltguild.org/activities.html
BOMquilts has two 2016 free BOMs. One is the Shabby Love that I'd posted before and the other is called Botanical Beauty. They're also doing a free mystery quilt on Superbowl weekend. Aaaargh! I can't resist these quick and easy mysteries! Oh, well, I'm wanting to hit my stash hard this year and these are good for using up my really old fabrics.

If there are any of these BOMs you're interested in don't forget to save the patterns before Monday. Most of them are only free for the first month like this Christmas quilt from Quilt Doodle Doodles.

They released the first block in the Splendid Sampler series. I'm not planning on trying to make the sampler but I've created a file on my computer as a pattern library to save the ones I like. This first block is a real sweetie and it's great for using up scraps. Since I'm not that keen on 6" blocks, I immediately thought I could make this as a 9" or 8" block.

I also found that Jenny Beyer is doing a pretty 2016 BOM. Here are the January blocks but it looks like you need to sign up for her newsletter to get the rest of the patterns.
www.jinnybeyer.com/promos/2016bom-CosmosNewYear
Here's a cute BOM from Debbie Mumm. I don't see a date on when it started but it looks like all the patterns have been released for it.
