It's time to get a forum quilt going at our new home. It's only fitting that a really fun sewing-related thing that Melissa started at "The Other Place" also follow her here. The Forum Quilt here will run exactly the same as it did 'over there', and all members are welcome to sign up for a square. As a refresher (and for our new friends who haven't done this before), here is how it works: This is a one-block project, not a swap.To each person who signs up, I will send a 12" square of fabric. Using that fabric, and any other fabrics you like, you will sew a quilt block of any pattern you desire, as long as it finishes at 12.5 inches square. Please wash and dry all fabrics you use (forum fabric has all ready been prewashed), but please do not use fabric softener. Mail your block back to me by May 10th to be eligible for the drawing. Please make sure to put enough postage on it, and allow up to ten days for delivery (yes, sometimes it does take that long, USPS only knows why. . . ) For each block received by the deadline, I will enter the name of the member who created it into the drawing, and then draw a winner at random after the mail goes through on May 10th. The winning name will be posted on this thread that evening. The person whose name is drawn at random will receive all the blocks. The winner is responsible for supplying (through purchase or use stash fabric) four yards of fabric for the next forum quilt and must mail me that fabric. Once the new fabric has been received, I will send the winner the blocks they won, plus an extra yard of the forum fabric to use in finishing their quilt. Reply to this thread to sign-up, and then PM me your mailing addy so I can get the fabric sent out to you ASAP. We have 24 pieces of fabric available, and sign-up will remain open until either the fabric is all taken, or April 22nd (to allow time for mailing fabric both ways, and sewing )

That is such a cool idea! However, being that I'm first a procrastinator and second, not the slightest bit handy with a sewing machine I'm going to have to sit this one out. But, in my Walter Mitty moments, I sometimes dream about making quilts.

Oh barefootfarmer, we can help you through it! It is really fun. I like seeing all of the different blocks that folks make with the same bit of fabric. I've been waiting and looking forward to doing this again with everyone, so of course, I'm in!

Question .... Fabrics are suppose to be cotton? Cotton is preferrable, as the forum fabric is cotton. If everyone uses cotton fabrics in their blocks, funky shrinkage during washing (for the lucky person who makes this into a quilt) shouldn't be an issue.

But, in my Walter Mitty moments, I sometimes dream about making quilts. Blocks don't have to be intricate or complicated. If you can sew a straight seam either with a sewing machine or by hand, you can make a 4-patch or 9-patch block and join us in the fun. The more the merrier! As wvterri, said, we'll help you.

Tallpines, If you have something that is not 100% cotton that you would like to use, I don't think anyone would mind too much. I admit to using whatever I have on hand and I might not even know what it is!!!

This sounds like a really neat swap and it was great seeing the blocks made up.
I would love to join but, sadly, if in the unlikely chance that I won, I simply wouldn't be able to afford 4 yards (well, actually it would be metres in my case) of fabric plus the postage to send it all back in. At the prices we pay here for fabric, that would set me back about $160 and that's beyond me at the moment.
But I will enjoy reading about progress and hopefully photos of the blocks will be posted so we can all see them.

@kiwifarmgal, Please don't let that stop you. If you win I'll volunteer the fabric for you.

Aw, that's very kind wvterri. What a sweetie, and thank you for that lovely offer. But I would feel a bit awkward about it because of the amount of fabric involved. However ... I've been thinking... if you guys don't mind sending me a fabric square each time, I'd be absolutely delighted to make blocks and send them back but simply take myself out of any draw. I could manage that just fine and I'd truly get just as much pleasure out of it. It would help use up some of my huge stash as well as feed my creativity.

@kiwifarmgal, I second wvterri, offer to buy fabric if you win!! I have won the blocks twice over the years and struggle with putting my name in the hat again, but doing the one block is so much fun.

@kiwifarmgal, you are more than welcome to join in, even if you do not wish (due to logistics) to be in the drawing.
In fact, anyone who would really like to make a block, but is not sure if they should sign up because of having to purchase fabric for the next quilt if they win, should sign up anyway. If you would just like to sew, but not be included in the drawing, just let me know in a PM or in a note when you return your block.

Thanks Tallpines and Billie. My offer is open to anyone that may be holding back because of the cost of the fabric, or sending it. I have hundreds of bolts and thousands of yards of fabric. Really. I had a small shop and kept all of the stuff as I intended to open again after I moved. Maybe one of these days...

Honestly over the years many people have participated and asked not to be included in the drawing for whatever reason.
If buying the fabric is an issue, it does not have to be an expensive choice. I often see nice fabric at Joanns for $3-4 a yard. And as others have said there are people who will donate from their stash.

I am in for the swap and will be doing a simple block this time around i think. I will also chip in to help defray purchase cost of fabric for someone if they need it.

Well you guys are just so wonderful. Thank you for the kindness. Although I have a huge stash, none of it is more than 1-2 metres at best, but lots to choose from to make blocks. So I WILL join in, but for logistical purposes I won't participate in the draws. It takes about 10 or so days for mail to get here, but as soon as I get the square each time, I'll make up the block and get it back on its way. So krisinmi, do we PM you with our address details?

ok, I hesitated because I've never quilted or made a block before but you all seem so helpful - I'll stick my toe in the water. Please include me to make a block(s) but I wouldn't have any idea what to do if I won the draw - so exclude me from that this time around.
Maybe once I retire and get some experience under my belt, I'll go 'all in' the next time.
thanks!

mzgarden, I'm so happy you're going to join in. It is totally addictive and if you start with something simple you won't get frustrated with it and want to chuck it in the bin. A couple of points: just think about the fact that your contribution each time will go towards keeping someone lovely and warm and comforted. Secondly, perhaps you could make two blocks. One to send and one to keep as the start of your very own first quilt. There will only ever be one first quilt. I think I'll do that so that even though I'm not participating in the quilt draw, there will be a tiny part of all the group when I have enough blocks made. Is that a win/win situation or what?

This thread is just exploding! I am so glad to see so much interest and discussion. tonasket, you are in. There are plenty of blocks left; by my count we currently have ten participants, so that means there is fabric and room for lots more people to sign up.
