TIL the crush and drain method of collecting honey. It's working like a charm, and I think (think, think) we will get about a gallon of honey for our first harvest.

TIL how well kids sound cancelling ear protection works against the horrors of industrial automatic toilets. Yes, this means I will be hauling children's ear muffs with me for the forseeable future. But it was so good for DS to be able to use the toilet at the grocery store today without having me have to hold him up, and for him to be able to wash his hands because they weren't clamped over his ears.
Best $11 I've spent in a long while.

TIL that even if you take out all the seeds and membranes of the peppers, they can still be pretty dang hot! My green chili will have to be diluted with some major amounts of tomatoes to be edible with out pain.

EIL (everyday I'm learning) how to gradually get things done with the little ones here and underfoot or in my arms. I keep telling myself that I did this with twin babies and my sister in law's baby who was six months younger, so why am I having such a time getting housework done now? Maybe it has something to do with being 40 years older? Hah. I'm getting it figured out. Thinking towards spring gardening, how to get it done with two babies to care for now that they are in our custody.

moldy,Yep, I learned ages ago to wear gloves when handling the peppers, no matter benign that set of peppers seems to be. jangirl,I hope you can get a good system worked out for you and the little ones. I've seen some of what you have written in regards to having them, and it is such a significant and good and helpful thing you did for them, I can't help but thing that somehow (S)someone(s) will be shining upon you to make it work for you and them.

Thanks for the kind words, gracielagata, It's caused a lot of rift in our family, as gd, their mother is so angry at US, even tho all we did was answer the question as to whether or not we could keep them for the time being. I guess you can't make someone who is not mentally ok see the situation as it really is. Makes me so sad for her, as we raised her as our own and now she is so different off her meds. I'm learning that I cannot change everything, so have to accept what is.

jangirl, It's sad when I read things like this- that evidently simply taking one's medicine fixes the issue, but yet they won't/don't. kawaiitimes, I didn't know you even had books to read! Very cool for you! Hmm let's see, I can add to my EMT knowledge now- YIL, and R(ecently)IL how to get patients on backboards and to put in various airway adjuncts and breathing tubes. Pretty nifty skills to have, but let's hope I don't need them, as interesting and fun as they were to do. Backboarding out of odd locations, such as the back of a tight brush truck is pretty neat, since you have to strap the patient down and then very carefully raise and lift them over everything and then down to the ground, some 4+ feet below to other rescuers. Oh, and taking vitals, I don't know if I previously had those listed here.

kawaiitimes , Thanks, now I can check them out. Would you recommend them for a very high reading 13 year old who loves the post-apocalyptic and dystopian genre of books? I glanced over the Adaline description and it sounds like it could be something she might like.

gracielagata , yes! Adaline is great for that age group. And the sequel, Biocide, should be out in a few months. The DK Greene book, S is for Serial, is really, really, really for adults though.

This week I learned that a friend of ours, who we have been planning to visit in a couple of months, has had a rash of in-home invasions and murders in his neighborhood. His area of Phoenix is terrifying. Following up on this one, TIL that friend's neighbor drove a van into a pawn shop, botched an armed robbery, and then SWAT found him hiding out at home. They swarmed the neighborhood and bust the house two doors down from our friend all up until they found and detained the guy. Holy bananas.

kawaiitimes, Great on teh book front, thanks. And great also on the bad neighbor of the friend front too, I imagine, as long as this guy was the one responsibly for the break-ins, which i think you had said he likely was. Hopefully the idiot didn't hurt anyone or cause anyone to become hurt, unless it was himself...

The arrested neighbor actually isn't likely to be the same person doing the neighborhood break ins - that group of burgalers murdered people found in the home. Really awful. I think he said there were three families that lost people in that string of robberies.

gracielagata, have you tried link? She has a lot of great apocalyptic fiction that would be appropriate reading for that age group. kawaiitimes,, glad you're staying safe. If I was your friend, I think I"d be looking at relocation! TIL you can thicken up tomato sauce really quick by running it thru cheesecloth before canning.

TIL how to make rose petal jelly. It's so pretty, and tastes so good. I got tired 2/3 of the way through and used the rest of the rose water in a hot bath. The perfect way to end a day of canning.

moldy, yes I did, thanks. I wanted to verify with kawaiitimes, that they were the age group they appeared. I couldn't get the Amazon link to work for a while, so I couldn't find any direct info about the age group, if I remember. I still need to show it to my daughter so we can put it/them on her kindle. kawaiitimes, that jelly sounds neat. I always marvel at when we humans have turned something traditionally considered a smell only into something edible. I wonder if you have to like the smell of roses to enjoy the jelly? ANd love the bath idea, too funny!

gracielagata, with the rose jelly I would say that yes you've got to have a nose for roses or else it may not be very enjoyable. It tastes mega sweet and floral, so a little goes a long way. But it is gorgeous and delicious if you're into weird things like I am. TIL that our bulldog loves to go down the slide at the park! I was trying to help my son knock a spider web off of the slide and our dog climbed the very steep steps with me and then followed me/son down the slide. Then she climbed the other side to go down another slide! She went down several times on multiple slides. Craziest thing- and the kids loved watching her.

Funny story about the dog, kawaiitimes,! I needed a laugh today. Indeed an awesome dog! gracielagata, EMT skills are a good thing to have. Our son cross trained into that field after his IT jobs kept getting outsourced. He loves it! I can't believe how much knowledge he has amassed since beginning his training. Good for you!

Thanks jangirl, I started at our all-volunteer fire district last year and have learned so much in that time! Your son is very smart!! ICS (In class Saturday, lol), we got to hot load a pretend patient onto a medical helicopter. That was after one of my fellow classmates got to help radio the helicopter down to its landing location. That was all pretty darn cool. Except now all my friends and family are picking on me about my hair- asking if I can even brush it, as I hardly ever put it up, and it's usually a big thick mass of curls, not counting adding in helicopter rotor wind. I do obviously put it up to go on calls, and do in EMT class as well.. but it makes for some good laughs.

He said to absolutely avoid burr mills if you can, and find a roller mill if you are going to invest in one. Then he said, "If you are just starting out though, find a NutriBullet at Goodwill. You want a blender with flat blades that will push the grain up, not a standard blender with a flower or cupped blade that will pull the grain down."
So... I'm going to the thrift stores to see what I can see.

Mari-in-IN, LOL! Try having two dogs or one with long hair get into it!!! My sympathies to You of course though! Hugs! TIL- that some friends have to be dealt with on Their terms (as one understands the person) to "keep the peace". Sometimes avoiding an "issue" really might be better than trying to discuss it all "honestly" through the hard feelings that came to pass. I wouldn't Choose not being open and honest;but sometimes you really need to see what might happen with the Other person if you are...I kept to inner guidance communicating with a friend that hurt me yesterday and today I think we'll keep-on instead of having an emotional fight. I think my lesson was not "avoidance" but "letting go" and moving to a new "headset".
