I have a couple small 2-heddle loom ... both from the 1960s ... both needing new heddles. I went out to Paul's workshop, got a piece of scrap wood & 4 nails to make a string heddle jig ... life savers.
Like you said, better to find it sooner rather than later!

Thanks for the tips @osiris, I will let you know how she does when she goes outside. It won't be until May 15 for that.

What size heddles Cyndi? I have a bunch of old ones that I put in a bag. They're 10 1/2 inch.

Thanks, osiris, but these are just small 'child' looms Here is my granddaughter (at age 3) making her first woven wash cloth on one of them

Ah Cyndi..... what a cutie! And so proud of her first weaving! Start 'em while they're young. And the jig for heddles is a good idea. I've seen that. If this heddle works out I might make some more. It's definitely spring here! The scilla are blooming all over the lawn and woods. I have to cut them down with an old rotary mower because they'll choke out the gas mower. The leaves are so succulent, it'll be shooting green mud out the side. Can't fight mamma nature. Sure is beautiful tho! Attachments:

Beautiful scilla, osiris. I only have a handful here and there, they look pretty wimpy compared to your picture.
MLF, you sure knit that hitofude up fast! Can't wait to see a picture of it. I might just need to add that to my Ravelry list. . .

Well, Old 'GUS' is still quite strong! This is a remarkable loom/machine. If I had the fly shuttles, I'd certainly use them. But I don't. It takes a lot of heave (compared to regular floor looms)to get the mechanism to work. You have to overcome the mechanism when you pull, then when you push the beater back, you have to hit the harnesses to set the gear to make the next shed. It may not be adjusted perfectly, but the mechanism does work. I also had to fiddle with the brake to get the right tension. I've found I could weave thinner material/yarn tho. The auto cloth advance is contingent on the brake pressure. The more brake pressure, the less advancement. It's just a matter of playing with the adjustment. I've also found that I can sit down at it instead of standing. Standing would work for shorter people. I'm just not used to 'banging' on a loom. But this monster is definitely built for it. Now I inderstand what people have said about it. I got it warped, fixed the threading error, tied on and started the header. I began by trying a rather thick cord. Almost a jute rope - about 1/4 inch thick. It's a sage green. I can't get it to pack in tight enough with the plain weave at 12 epi. You can see right through the fabric. (left side of the pic) About 3/16 inch gap between the picks. No good! It would probably work for REP weave, but that would require twice as much warp .
So I moved on to denim strips (Medium dark blue) I already knew it probably wouldn't work, and it certainly didn't. It doesn't pack in either. So I moved on to the large boat shuttles of (6 strands per) yarn that came with the loom.(Lighter blue) This actually works pretty well, but I don't like the edges. It could be that I still have to get a handle on the feel of this loom. I just don't want to draw in too much. Learning curve here. So I tried some of this purple-ish multi colored (last color on the warp) yarn I found a HUGE tube of in my stash. It's a synthetic. It gives a VERY tight plain weave and the color is pretty neat. Warp stripes always alter the colors of the weft. The purple isn't so glaring. I kind of like it. So it's a tossup between the blue yarn and the purple. I wish I could double this purple. Might produce an even more stark color stripe. I've got a couple yards to play with. This is only the first 15 inches. I do have some cotton cloth in balls. I may even try that. More as I progress. Cyndi, it's easy. You learn 3 or 4 main things and you can tackle weaving. And with your enthusiasm for fiber, I bet you'd be putting out a lot of neat things. In June....let's see what we can do. ;-)

I've dabbled with them in the past, from Punky's 'child looms' to the rigid heddle to the two 4-harness. I've made a couple table runners & Spanish Moss rifle slings ...
The looms are upstairs and it is a matter of "out of sight"

That cardigan is pretty MLF. Hopefully one day I'll get to that skill level! The purple next to the light blue color looks quite nice Osiris. I got one panel done for my blanket, and I've started the next one. I got 2 more after this, then I'm going to have my mother help me figure out how to crochet them together. I took a pic to post, but unfortunately I can't get it onto my computer since my hard drive crashed last year. I went to try to install the software to do so only to find out it's been updated and is unavailable for my operating system. So unless I can convince my BF to upload my pics to his computer, then send them to my computer I got nothing to show. I will at least go to the trouble to post a pic once it's finished, but that won't be for a while. Everyone who can post pics please keep doing so, it's so inspiring and keeps me wanting to work on my project!

Muller's Lane Farm does working on myself and in the garden count? Nothing fibery going on here yet, I still need to get to my LYS.

Of course it counts, Woodpecker! You have a pretty full plate already. It is getting to be that time of year that I'll put my wheels & yarn away until after canning is over ... :sigh:

I bought two skeins of a beautiful blue yarn several weeks ago but can't find a pattern to settle on. It's for a matching hat and scarf set for next winter.
I've checked a lot of online sites with no results. Seems like no one around here likes hand knitted items. A couple Christmases ago I knit scarves for a number of people but never saw them being worn. Which is okay...not everyone has to like knitted items. So now I knit for myself. Have made so many hats and scarves and really enjoy wearing them.
Cyndi...I might have to work up the nerve to attempt a sweater.

Boy can I sympathize with you there..... I've only now decided how I'm gonna make the rag rug place mats on the loom. It's been a week and a half of deciding and experimenting! And the christmas presents thing isn't too bad either because you get to make something you like and give it to someone without having to buy it!! Plus you get the extra bonus of all that experience. I did mug rugs for a bunch of people. Only one person I've seen use it. But I had a ball learning! I'm working on joining strips for the placemets. I've seen a lot of suggestions that tell you to join them at 90 degree angles and trim off the excess. I went further and joined them on top of each other and sewed them at a long angle. When they're trimmed and pulled into the warp on the loom, the 'bump' isn't as noticible. I tried laying them in by hand, but it took forever to overlap them to minimize the bump. Had to bite the bullet and get out the sewing machine. I think I'm ready to start weaving now! Finally! Attachments:

I've been watching this thread, trying really hard not to feel guilty. I haven't done much knitting all winter. And I was so sure I'd get a ton done "as soon as the garden was finished". Last week, I did get a bit inspired and knitted up these simple cowls. (and for some reason, I can't post pictures directly from my computer again.)
